The New York Times Bestseller
Recently retired WWE superstar AJ Mendez Brooks is a powerhouse—strong, quirky, and totally confident. But that wasn’t always the case. With humor and tremendous heart, she opens up for the first time about her harrowing struggle to understand her demons and the diagnosis that helped her gain control over her life.
Everything I was told should be my greatest insecurities and weaknesses, everything that I’ve been labeled—SHORT, NERDY, SKINNY, WEAK, IMPULSIVE, UGLY, TOMBOY, POOR, REBEL, LOUD, FREAK, CRAZY—turned out to be my greatest strengths. I didn’t become successful in spite of them. I became successful because of them.
Growing up AJ was a quiet girl trying to act “normal” when she felt anything but. As her family struggled with drug addiction, poverty, and mental illness, she found escape through comic books and video games, and was inspired by the tough and unconventional female characters. It wasn’t until she discovered pro wrestling that she learned superheroes could be real.
Determined to become the superhero she’d always admired, AJ trained and sacrificed for years to achieve her dream of wrestling professionally. Yet she quickly faced industry pressure to play the role of the damsel in distress and to dress more provocatively to cater to male fans. But she fought back and created an ass-kicking alter ego that was a genuine representation of herself: nerdy, enthusiastic, and a little bit crazy.
With humor and tremendous heart, AJ opens up for the first time about her harrowing struggle to understand her demons and the mental illness diagnosis that helped her gain control over her life. What most people view as a hardship, AJ embraced as inspiration for her superhero persona, shattering the stigma attached to mental illness.
Charting her journey from a scrappy girl in an unstable home to an empowered wrestling champion, Crazy Is My Superpower is an unflinchingly honest story and brave confessional about her long road to self-acceptance.

Engaging read, very genuine
By Richard
I was a fan of AJ Lee from her time in WWE, so I had high expectations for this book coming in, and it still managed to surpass them. It should be noted that a majority of this book covers her upbringing and family struggles, rather than an in-depth look at her career in professional wrestling. With that said, the former is far more intense than anyone would expect and was certainly the highlight of the book. She does make sure to cover the most important events of her wrestling career, and ends it on a heartwarming note which should give fans closure on her retirement.
The writing was especially engaging and genuine so I'm looking forward to more work from her in the future.

Entertaining and relatable, AJ shines as a writer
By Staci
This book is a very emotional and interesting read. AJ is a gifted writer, and brings life to her past with her words. Those expecting an autobiography more about her time in the wrestling business are going to be a bit disappointed, but her life is a lot more interesting than I had known when I was a fan of her while she was wrestling. I don't consider it a bad thing at all that this book is more about her life before wrestling, it adds a lot of context to her life and how her character within WWE developed. I highly recommend this book to fans of AJ's, as well as those with mental illness, and those who have survived dysfunctional households growing up. AJ's story is very relatable, and goes to show what can be achieved with hard work and perseverance when faced with difficult life circumstances.

Unexpected but thoroughly Enjoyed
By Alexander von der Linden
This isn't the book I expected it to be. This isn't a tell-all book about her time in the WWE, or even a compendium of wrestling anecdotes. This is more an in-depth look at how upbringing and mental illness can shape a person's life. A.J.'s life had the capacity to turn out a much darker tale and while she never delves into it deeply, she uses her mother's struggles with MI to show how hers could have turned out.
AJ is an engaging writer, and the tone of the book is conversational, bouncing around a bit, though the book mostly flows out in a chronological order. The bulk of the book is focused around her childhood and pre-wrestling time, and the wrestling is treated as any other job, more o fa backdrop to further the book than a focus.
I thought it was interesting how few wrestlers are name checked in the book. Punk, Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, Kane, John Cena, and Fit Finlay on the male side, Kaitlyn, Naomi, Layla, Beth Phoenix, Michelle McCool on the female. Especially interesting to me are who isn't mentioned, specifically the Bellas or Paige.
THe book shines the most when AJ hits a topic which she feels passionately about. Whether it be the fact that Bipolar isn't something she sees as a negative but part of her that's shaped her life, street harassment, self-image, etc. the writing flows and you can get caught up in her passion. It's an incredible feeling.
I'd recommend this novel for anyone who is struggling with MI, especially who is Bipolar. It could also be a great book to show kids how with hard work and utter dedication to a task you can achieve a dream, even with setbacks
