Jennifer DeCurtins is a fitness instructor, personal trainer, yoga teacher and creator of the popular blog PeanutButterRunner. Most Effective Yoga And Exercise Book I Have Ever Read And Used!

This informative and illustrative guide is exactly what has been missing from my yoga practice. As someone who has been practicing yoga just over 2 years and participates in power vinyasa, this book gives me the opportunity to stop and take the time to learn proper form and alignment. Although it is titled as an inversions guide, the book actually leads you through and demonstrates standing, seated, and foundational poses too. This book is suitable for all levels helping the beginner gain a better understanding of poses and the experienced yogi accomplish advanced transitions. There is one asana (posture) shown per page with clear corresponding photography and instructions on "how to get there", "where to engage", and tips. I am fortunate to have taken the author's yoga classes and no teacher is better qualified to have written such a book. The descriptions are concise and easy to understand and although it can be difficult to instruct physical activity through writing, DeCurtins accomplishes this very effectively. I appreciate that the book is a resource for me, inspires me to grow as a yogi, as well as encourages me to incorporate at-home practice. This is just the tool I needed to embrace approaching inversions and it is a must-add to your library. R.P.

Amazing yoga resource!

Such a great yoga resource for students and teachers. While the book title is focused on inversions, the book also includes foundational information about essential poses such as downward facing dog, warrior 1, side angle, triangle, etc. The book then builds on those "gateway poses" and shows you advanced variations. For example, from warrior 1, the book then takes you through variations such as humble warrior, flying splits, bird of paradise and astavakrasana. Each pose has "how to get there" step by step instructions and "where to engage" pointers that are great tips for cuing students. The "anatomy notes/tips & tricks" often give pointers about what to practice first if the full pose isn't accessible yet - great encouragement to keep practicing. The photography is beautiful and the book is laid out in a way that makes it very easy to read. This is a book I'll refer to often both in my own practice and in teaching!

I'm a fairly new yogi, started practicing 1 year ago. Ashtanga and power yoga are my favorite types. I wanted to learn difficult poses the proper way without hurting myself. This book is great explaining the poses. The pictures are very helpful.

THE DIVINE COMEDY of Dante and Dor� becomes eminently accessible courtesy of Joseph Lanzara

Joseph Lanzara's stunning adaptation of Dante Alighieri's INFERNO is such a fine work of art, certainly one of the most sophisticated Graphic Novels to be released, may at first suggest the old classic comics of old - the way many youngster's took the short cut to 'reading' the books assigned in school. But this graphic novel is far more than that. Joseph Lanzara has taken on the challenge of making this immense work of literature accessible to everyone: his narrative is eloquent, precisely correct and has a keen sense of distillation of Dante's THE DIVINE COMEDY written in 1317 and moves Dante's journey with Virgil into the depths of the inferno and the heights of the heavens so that the 'story' flows comfortably and comprehensively well.

Lanzara has wisely elected to use the classic illustrations created by Gustave Dor�, the gifted French illustrator who provided the powerful imagery for Dante's work. As biographer's have written, `Gustave Dor�'s (1832-1883) illustrations and Dante's Divine Comedy have become so intimately connected that even today, nearly 150 years after their initial publication, the artist's rendering of the poet's text still determines our vision of the Commedia. Planned by Dor� as early as 1855, the Dante illustrations were the first in a series he referred to as the "chefs-d'oeuvre de la litt�rature." In addition to Dante, Dor�'s list of illustrated great works included Homer, Ossian, Byron, Goethe, Racine, and Corneille. The placement of Dante's Commedia at the top of this list reflects the poet's popularity within mainstream French culture by the 1850s. The 19th century saw an expansion of interest in Dante's work which resulted in numerous translations of the Commedia into French, critical studies, newspapers, and specialized journals, and over 200 works of painting and sculpture between 1800-1930. Dor�'s choice of Dante's Inferno as the first of his proposed series of illustrated masterpieces of literature reflects the extent to which Dante had attained popular appeal in France by the 1860s. Finding it difficult to secure a publisher willing to take on the expense of producing the expensive folio edition the artist envisioned, Dor� himself financed the publication of the first book of the series, Inferno, in 1861. The production was an immediate artistic and commercial success. Subsequently, Dor�'s Dante illustrations appeared in roughly 200 editions, with translations from the poet's original Italian available in multiple languages.'

And now Joseph Lanzara has added an entirely new dimension to the marriage of Dante and Dor�, and referencing the English translations of the novel by Henry Francis Cary (1814) and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1867) he has develop the enormous scope of this epic into a succinct form, joining a selection of Dor�'s drawings with the adjacent words of Dante and the result is a visually powerful and literarily precise condensation of a masterpiece. The printing quality is excellent and the design of the story with the images is sophisticated.

Dante's THE INFERNO is one of those pieces of literature that has had a massive impact upon Western culture and its impact can be seen and felt even today. However, it's also a work that intimidates many people. Using Gustave Dore's famous black and white illustrations of THE DIVINE COMEDY and some of the dialogue taken from the text, Joseph Lanzara has molded together a work that is both breathtaking and highly accessible to a modern audience. Lanzara has streamlined the narrative, but readers who are new to Dante or THE DIVINE COMEDY will come away with some of the key points of the story as well as an appreciation of the vivid imagery contained within Dante's famed story after reading this graphic novel. DANTE'S INFERNO: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL makes an excellent introduction to THE DIVINE COMEDY, but it is also a work that students and fans of the text will probably enjoy and appreciate.

Dante and Dore for the Mainstream

If anyone says that Joseph Lanzara is attempting to replace Dante Aleghieri's famous Inferno-- Dante's Inferno (The Divine Comedy, Volume 1, Hell)--I would have to say that this simply isn't true. Lanzara's comic book version of Dante's allegorical poem reminds me of the old Classics Illustrated Comics that I collected as a kid. Indeed, these whittled down, illustrated renditions of notable works of literature persuaded young and reluctant readers to savor mini-versions of great artistry and rather than deter them from exploring the real deal later on, abbreviated versions like Classics Illustrated act as burning embers do to eventually fan a lasting flame. My first reading experiences were sitting on the floor of my cousin's bedroom, going through his vast collection of Classics Illustrated Comics and vying with my brother and other cousins for which one he was going to allow me to take home and fully read. This competitive spirit fostered an entire lifetime of reading pleasure.

In this case, Lanzara is introducing his reader not only to the great Dante and to Virgil, his guide, but to the Gustave Dore drawings that epitomize this epic masterpiece. In a scant thirty-pages, Lanzara recreates the Inferno and takes you on a whirlwind tour of the beautiful art that quintessentially represents the piece with winged angels and the woebegone denizens that populate Dante's unique brand of hell.

Lanzara doesn't need to modernize his text. He sticks to Henry Francis Cary's translation, peppering the Dore etchings with famous words the evoke the major story line magnificently.

Bottom line? Joseph Lanzara takes a "classic" tale out of the old Classic Illustrated Comic Book series in his recreation of "Dante's Inferno." Illustrated by the great master engraver Gustave Dore, Lanzara cannot go wrong. He presents an abbreviated but thoroughly adequate introduction into the classic tale where Dante blasts the authorities of his day that should urge his readers on to exploring the masterpiece in the original format. Recommended.

The lessons are logically structured. They take you from basic concepts to more advanced ones, while reapplying previously learned concepts for reinforcement. The book takes you step by step through the exercises contained on an accompanying CD. To give the student an overview of the final product, the exercises start out with a review of the finished product. Communications are clear and concise. This is the way to learn Pagemaker - far superior to working your way through the help topics contained in the program, and far more exhaustive than ordinary self-learning books on the topic. You can be confident in applying the power of the program in practical situations. I recommend it highly.

Defective. And nothing you can do about it.

I was impressed with this book at first. The step-by-step instructions to creating each project are easy to follow, yet they don't baby you along, either. Unfortunately, the party was over after finishing only two of the lessons. Problem is, Adobe/Peachpit Press [messed] up and forgot to include a few of the needed fonts on the CD-ROM that comes with the book. Therefore, you can't even do most of the lessons. Good luck getting help from Adobe or Peachpit. You'll come across little information, broken web links, and recorded messages and, in general, be ignored altogether. There are a lot of books out there to help you learn Pagemaker. Don't buy this one.

Even though I have moved to the next level from adobe, this product did the job needed in writing and illustrations, It was fairly easy to learn. I highly recommend this as a good starter.

Great story about an incredible kayak expedition and a fascinating kayaker

I had been waiting excitedly waiting for the release of the book about Freya Hoffmeister's epic sea kayak paddle around Australia, and when I received the book, I devoured it faster than a Great White goes through a breakfast of Amity Island tourists. It's a spectacular read!

There are two main aspects to the book, both of which I found fascinating and well explored by the author: The first - and obvious - aspect is the account of the expedition itself. The author, Glickman, renders the enormous challenges and portrays Freya's hair raising actions and life-or-death decisions with an acuity that is the result of his own impressive ocean kayaking experiences. He has participated in a half dozen ocean kayaking world championships, as well as performed long distance kayaking expeditions. In addition, he has talked extensively to everyone who attempted or completed the trip around Australia and is alive to talk about it.

But the other, equally fascinating aspect, is the psyche of Freya Hoffmeister, the woman whose feats are without equal among current expedition kayakers, male or female.

With men's domination over the kayaking world as absolute as King Luis XIV's reign over 17th century France, Freya's revolutionary feats of skill and endurance, combined with her cockiness, apparently made some male kayakers feel like Marie Antoinette on her way to the Guillotine, and they were not quiet about it. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the book is how you can identify with Freya and hope that she proves her male detractors wrong. She is unbelievably self-possessed and confident, yet equally skilled, competent and determined.

Hoffmeister is intent on breaking the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the continent and this goal drives many of her vital decisions, like the dangerous choice of a fast and tippy kayak and the 380 mile unsupported solo crossing of the Gulf or Carpenteria that most experts considered a recipe for suicide as reliable as cyanide cupcakes.

The author does a spectacular job of hitting the reader with superlatives and metaphors. Especially when gearing up to describe some of Hoffmeister's more incredible feats, I felt as dizzy as a Bantamweight practicing the rope-a-dope with Mike Tyson.

I highly recommend this book. It's a must read if you are a kayaker, and if you're not, it still is.

The only issues I had were the fact that it's not available for the Kindle and that I didn't realize there were maps of the trip in the back of the book until I finished it. I could have saved myself plenty of clicks on Google maps if I had figured that our earlier.

Black is slimming when you circumnavigate Australia

If you are looking to read about a woman's spiritual transformation as she journeys solo around a continent nearly as large as her ego, then this book is not for you. It is not an Eat Pray Love-athon, but more so, a true and objective story about a woman who decided what she wanted to do, connected all the dots to do so, and then set out and proved to many nay-sayers that she could do it. And so she did.

As a paddler, I knew something about Freya's trip through articles written by Joe Glickman, and from occasionally reading her blog entries. Because I found the blog almost painful and frequently annoying to read due to her flat and dull writing style, overabundance of emoticons, and self-adulation, I had already decided I didn't think this was the type of gal friend I would call up to go get a pedicure (although it appears she prefers to do this herself...well, of course she does!) Yet, I looked forward to the book's release, and when it arrived, I was ready to give it a go.

From page one, Joe Glickman draws you into the Who, What, Where, and attempts to answer the Why of this most complicated, frustrating, and goal-driven woman. He does a swell job in describing the geography, environment (sharks and crocs, oh my), history, and culture of Australia. These descriptions and stories provided visuals that had me realizing the significance of Freya's trek and the absurd mental strength needed to persevere day after day...Alone. (The chapter on the Zuytdorp Cliffs was most striking and my favorite). The recollections of the interactions between Freya and Oscar Chalupsky as well as others, and the author's own personal experiences such as his encounter with the blue bottles, were darn amusing. Do not doubt: Joe Glickman is a funny man.

As the book progressed, I found myself feeling sympathetic towards Freya, even sorry for her, as I sensed loneliness and a desperate need for attention contradicted by a desire for privacy. I'm not convinced she is fearless. (As a matter of fact, in one chapter, she admits to being afraid.) However, I am convinced that what kept her going is her refusal to give into fear (much less admit it), and her driven nature to complete what she started. In Fearless, the author creates a fair balance of factual and personal information where no matter what the reader thinks of the subject, one cannot deny this journey was a most amazing and historical accomplishment. Journalism at its finest.

Fearless should appeal not only to the obvious mob of kayakers, canoeists and other lovers of water sports, but also to anyone with a curiosity of foreign lands, quest for adventure, and to those who appreciate and ponder the ability to overcome extreme adversity. It's a quick and easy read, made enjoyable by Glickman's wit and insight.

(My only criticisms: there were a few--less than 5 small fingers--typo/grammatical errors uncaught by the editor, and the ending seemed a little rushed--perhaps the book was as eager as Freya was to finish..or maybe I just didn't want it to end.)

good book about a truly fearless human

Great read about a very impressive woman. Not quite what I was expecting -- I was expecting it to be more about what she saw and the hardships she faced. However, she is the kind of woman who truly is fearless and does not really recognize hardships or danger. So where most similar books would at least address 20' seas, she doesn't even feel the need to mention them (but the author does mention them on her behalf). So it wasn't quite my style as I was hoping to be able to learn from some of the good and bad things that happened in the book, but that was not possible given the writing style. Good overall though.

About the Author

Lee R. KumpGeology and is now editor of the Virtual Journal of Geobiology and associate editor of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. Dr. Kump's research interests include the behavior of nutrient and trace elements in natural environments, the evolution of ocean and atmosphere composition on geologic time scales, biogeochemical cycling in aquatic environments, and environmental change during extreme events (mass extinctions, extreme warm periods, glaciations) in Earth history.

James F. Kasting is a Professor at Penn State University, where he holds joint appointments in the Departments of Geosciences and Meteorology and is an affiliate of the NASA Astrobiology Institute and Penn State's ESSC. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Chemistry and Physics and did his PhD in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Michigan. Prior to coming to Penn State in 1988, he spent 7 year� in the Space Science Division at NASA Ames Research Center. Dr. Kasting is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life. His research focuses on the evolution of planetary atmospheres, particularly the question of why the atmospheres of Mars and Venus are so different from that of Earth. Dr. Kasting is also interested in the question of whether habitable planets exist around other stars and how we might look for signatures of life by doing spectroscopy on their atmospheres.

Robert G. Crane received his PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. After working as a Research Associate in the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the World Data Center-A for Glaciology in Boulder, he spent a year teaching at the University of Saskatchewan before moving to Penn State in 1985. Dr. Crane's research has been on microwave remote sensing of sea ice, ice-climate interactions, and, more recently, regional-scale climate change, climate downscaling techniques, and climate change and variability in southern Africa. He is coeditor of a text on the applications of artificial neural networks in geography. Currently Dr. Crane holds the position of Professor in the Department of Geography and an affiliate of the ESSC. He also serves as the Associate Dean for Education in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State.

This is not a traditional Earth science textbook. Such books treat individual components of the Earth system—the solid Earth, atmosphere, and oceans—separately, with little consideration of the interplay among them or the important interactions with living organisms (the stuff of ecology texts). And, although they are the focus of this book, the modern environmental problems of global warming, ozone depletion, and loss of biodiversity are treated in a fundamentally different way here than in most texts. Here we recognize that these problems have analogues from Earth history: The geological past is the key to the present and to the future.

Content

Chapter 1, "Global Change," is an overview of these important issues—the observational data that convince us that serious problems exist and the events in Earth's history that illuminate how the Earth system responds under stress. The rest of the book is organized into three major sections. Chapters 2 through 9 are devoted to an exploration of how Earth "works." They develop the notion that processes active on Earth's surface are functioning together to regulate climate, the circulation of the ocean and atmosphere, and the recycling of the elements. The biota play an important role in all of these processes. Chapters 10 through 15 take the reader through the history of Earth, highlighting those events that provide lessons for the future. The final four chapters focus on the future of the Earth system, addressing the modern problems of global change and the prospect of life on other planets in the context of what was presented in the first two sections.

Revisions to the First Edition

In the four years since the first edition of this book came out, a lot has changed. Atmospheric CO2 has increased by about 7 parts per million, freon-11 concentrations have decreased by 6 parts per trillion, and global surface temperatures have continued their inexorable but ragged rise. For this reason alone—just to keep up with the new data on global change—a book like this one needs to be regularly updated. However, it is not just the data that are changing. Ideas have been evolving as well during the past four years. New geologic evidence indicates that "Snowball Earth" episodes actually occurred not just once but several times during Earth's history. The case has been made that CH4, rather than (or in addition to) CO2, was the main greenhouse gas that helped to keep the early Earth warm despite reduced solar luminosity. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) released a new report that for the first time states unambiguously that human activities are responsible for at least part of the observed surface temperature increase. And NASA's generous support for the new discipline of "astrobiology" has made us even more aware of the tight connections between the evolving Earth and its biota.

We have tried to reflect these and other changes in the revised edition of our book. We have added two new chapters: Chapter 6 (on global climate models) and Chapter 9 (on the biota, ecosystems, and biodiversity). We've also expanded our discussion of early Earth, now devoting two chapters to the topic: Chapter 10, on the origin of Earth and of life, and Chapter 11, on the effect life has had on the development of the atmosphere. Some of this involved simply reorganizing material that had previously been included in other chapters; however, a significant amount of new material has been added. Chapter 9 recognizes the importance of numerical modeling in the establishment of policy for a changing world. Chapter 9 highlights the role that the biota plays in the Earth system. Chapters 10 and 11 draw on the "universal" tree of life derived from sequencing of ribosomal RNA that places humans and fungi as closer relatives than different forms of bacteria. The order of Chapters 11 and 12 (Chapters 8 and 9 in the first edition) has been switched to reflect the increased importance of the O2/CH4 story for Precambrian paleoclimates.

Organization and Pedagogy

As in the first edition, we have employed a number of pedagogical features to assist in the learning process. Each chapter begins with "Key Questions" (objective questions students should be able to answer after they have read the chapter) and a "Chapter Overview" (a broad preview of the chapter to come). Within each chapter are boxed essays that provide interesting asides, more detailed or quantitative treatments of material in the text, or recent advances in scientific understanding. A "Chapter Summary" is provided in outline form at the end of each chapter to aid in reviewing the most important concepts. "Suggested Readings" include both general readings and advanced readings for students (and instructors) interested in further information about the subject matter. These are followed by "Key Terms" lists, which consist of boldfaced terms that are introduced in the chapter and that appear in the "Glossary" in the back of the book. "Review Questions" focus students' review on important concepts and require only brief answers, whereas "Critical-Thinking Questions" are thought questions or analytical exercises that require students to synthesize concepts presented in the chapter. In designing this second edition, we have tried to organize our topics more logically and categorize special topics into "boxes" of different types, with the designations A Closer Look, which offers a closer examination of topics discussed in the book; Important Concepts, with in-depth presentations of fundamental concepts from the natural sciences essential to our understanding of the Earth system; and Thinking Quantitatively, which emphasizes how mathematics is used to better understand the workings of the Earth system. Instructors may choose whether to make any or all of these boxes assigned reading. We have also corrected errors pointed out to us by our students and by other faculty using the book, and we've brought the data graphs up to date. We hope that these changes will help make the book easier to use in a variety of different courses, as well as being more accessible and informative to students.

Chapter Sequencing

We anticipate that this book will be used in a variety of ways. We teach a general education class at The Pennsylvania State University that covers approximately three-quarters of the book during one semester. Several instructors teach this course, but not all of us choose to cover the same chapters. An instructor who is most interested in climate issues, for example, might use Chapters 1-6, 8 12, 14-16, and 19. One who is most interested in biodiversity might choose Chapters 1, 2, 8-11, 13, ant 18. The course can also be tailored to emphasize either Earth history (Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 9-15) or modern global environmental problems (Chapters 1-6, 8, 9, and 16-19"' By providing more material than can easily be covered ii a one-semester course, we provide the flexibility to emphasize topics or topic areas that are of interest to different instructors and different groups of students.

Excellent (similar to 2nd edition, but this one has key updates)

What I wrote for the 2nd edition can be applied to this edition: Earth System Science is a new field, one that evolves much more quickly than textbooks can be revised. This one is as current as you can expect, and it approaches the field of science in a much better way than any other textbook I have seen. In particular, most earth system texts approach the field by morphing from a traditional discipline. Usually, it's a geology textbook revised to include atmospheric, oceanic, and climatic studies. But earth system science requires an interdisciplinary approach from the start, a problem based approach. Our global environmental problems need this approach, and this book covers them in a reasonably detailed and accurate manner.

This 3rd edition has a new short chapter on the cryosphere. Many recent studies have highlighted the dramatic changes in the cryosphere, so this chapter is a welcome addition. In addition, results and figures from the IPCC 2007 are included, which makes this update worth getting in and of itself given the rapid advances in climate science. I still find the structure of the book, with themes of climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion and loss of biodiversity, to be an outstanding format, as the authors draw links between past, present and future. Impressively, I find that this book is suitable for science and non-science majors alike.

excellent text book - best it its field

I'm a prof at a small liberal arts college, and I love using this text in my course on global environmental change. It works well with non-science majors, as well as with the more advanced science students. It does a superb job with climate change science, which is one of the major focii in my course. It doesn't hesitate to use real physics, math, and chemistry, yet at the same time is accessible to the non-science folks. Lee Kump is one of the premiere geoscientists in the field, and he has lent his broad understanding to this excellent text. It might also be fun to simply read the book if you are not a student.

The 3rd edition is quite similar to the 2nd, with additional material from the 2007 IPCC report.

Highly recommended to those interested in any field of geoscience. This book is very clear and precise. It gives a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of our planet. As a matter of fact, it's among some of the most well written textbooks I've ever come across.

This book makes Scala programming language easy to understand especially for those who are not computer savvy or expert on this kind of language. It is written systematically and explains the basics concepts like the syntax, variables, and operators. Overall, this book is a good guide on learning Scala Programming.

Everything I needed to get up and running with Scala programming in one book

This book is filled with great tips on how to program in Scala. I know I was shocked to see just how easy and fun this process was. The whole learning process went smoothly with little difficulty. I have always wondered whether Scala would be hard to learn and many people say that it isn't easy, but with Matthew's help, it was a piece of cake. The book hits all of the core concepts for the language like basic syntax, variables, operators, and even decision making and loops. This book is great for a new beginner and also people who already know a bit of Scala but are looking for even more knowledge to add to their understanding. This is a definite recommend.

Wouldn't waste the time

Was able to borrow through Prime, so I was glad for that, as I would have been quite upset had I paid anything for this book. I found it too basic to be of any value. There were many typos and several problems with the code examples. In my opinion, there was too much text that did not say much (introducing examples, for instance) and not enough to explain the key concepts in better detail.
