Good Introduction to Catholicism

The first reviewer has missed the point of this book.

This book provides a good introduction for the general public and new Catholics as an ecumenically minded survey of what Catholics believe. This book is NOT a statement of the official teaching of the Catholic Church, nor is it a statement from supporters of the official positions of the Catholic Church. The beliefs of Catholics are highly varied and the plain truth is that many and even most Catholic practitioners disagree with at least some of the official teachings of the Catholic Church. This is good, and it shows how a church can be divided in belief and yet still find unity in what they do have in common, instead of dividing up into little pieces as the protestants have done. The author wants to present what the Catholic world community believes by representing all its diversity.

I am pretty well educated in Catholic belief, but since I did not grow up Catholic, I wanted to fill in any gaps in my knowledge on these matters. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a grasp of what being Catholic really means, what actual Catholics actually believe and practice in addition to the official and traditional Catholic teachings, and not the stereotypes you hear in the media or from the pulpit in protestant churches.

It DOES have the imprimatur...

I think this book is a very good guide for RCIA. Other reviewers seem to be disappointed that it is not "Orthodox enough". Note, however, that it does have the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, indicating that it is free from doctrinal or moral error. This doesn't mean that everyone will agree with the opinions expressed, or language used ("negative vibe").

I'd suggest that it is a bit more like how we think of Pope Benedict than how we thought of Cardinal Ratzinger-- some are unhappy that the Pope isn't "as tough as he was", and others feel that the Pope strikes a good balance between teaching moral discipline, and guiding the flock with a loving hand. I think this book is more like the latter. For example, writing about whether homosexual unions should be permitted, it says "Some say yes, but the official position of the Catholic Church is still no." (pg 142).

That is an accurate statement of Catholic belief. However, this language will upset some as too ambiguous ("Some say yes"-- who? Is it talking about Catholic laity-- aren't they listening to the magisterium? Are Catholic priests preaching that-- time to excommunicate!) and not forbidding enough.

Hopefully this review will suggest to you whether this book is right for you and your parish.

The tale introduces Michael Freiheit, alpha pack leader, whose original dislike for heroine Aiden Walsh is almost laughable. Through a series of mysterious events Aiden is tossed into Michael's secret world. The story is filled with steamy passion, mystery and great action. While the story is somewhat short, it is still a likeable read.

I don't usually write reviews, but I couldn't resist. Somebody complained that he thought he was "buying a book and only got 60 pages for $2.99.." This person must buy his reading material by the pound. He'd rather have 300 pages of crap for his $2.99 than 60 pages of golden prose by one of America's finest word smiths - Lawrence Block. Perhaps he doesn't understand what a "novella" is. It is plainly stated in the description, and on the cover of "Resume Speed" that it is a novella. The very definition of a novella is a piece that is longer than a short story, shorter than a full novel. Let me tell you and him - ANYTHING written by Lawrence Block is really priceless. And we are privileged to be able to buy his work at such a pittance. This complainer is either the world's greatest skin flint, or he should stick to James Patterson.

and brilliant pacing. As Bill Thompson settles in Cross Creek

I’ve been reading Lawrence Block’s books for over 30 years now, and this novella is a compact masterclass illustrating why. The basic concept is a well-worn one in crime fiction – drifter with a dark, mysterious past tries a fresh start on life in a new town, but his past catches up with him. But it's how you tell it, and Block tells it so well, with the crisp economical narrative style and dialogue typical of his work, and brilliant pacing. As Bill Thompson settles in Cross Creek, Montana, the tension builds not from what he does so much as the slow reveal of what he’s done and what he’s trying to avoid doing again. It’s gripping, page-turning stuff, and deeper than it appears at first glance. Resume Speed is a miniature character study of how humans sometimes seek redemption and a second chance, but just can’t seem to attain it – even when it’s placed right in front of them – because they’re running away from their own guilt over transgressions real and imagined. All that and a cracking good story in 21,000 words.

Block delivers a superbly crafted tale of "slow burn" psychological supsense

Lawrence Block returns with a novella of “slow burn” psychological suspense. It begins with Bill Thompson boarding a bus in the night, blood and scratches on his arms, running away from an event he does not clearly remember from the night before. The story follows him for several months as he attempts to put together the pieces of his life in a new town. Most of the narrative concerns itself with how he makes new human connections, finds companionship, and begins to build a new future for himself.

It is a testament to Block’s craft, superb characterization, and thrifty dialog that he maintains building tension in a tale with no violence or action. Block teases out the dark and terrifying backstory slowly until the surprising conclusion.

I could easily give five stars, but my one complaint is that it felt derivative of Donald Westlake’s novel Memory. The whole time I was reading I kept thinking how similar the characters and situations seemed, and that detracted from my experience.

Feldman has made art criticism easy to understand for the student and non-student layperson alike. Throughout the book he uses clear examples from established art works to ilustrate the ideas used in identifying what is art through the use of one's perception. The book is clearly divided into logically linked chapters. The last half of the book can be used as an outline to clearly write one's own criticism, and, with a little work, construct a criticism comparing any two artworks from any media. This is a "must have" book for any graphic or performing artist.
