Very Good!

The author of this book was looking for people to review her story so I contacted her and then went to download my copy (it was being offered for free that day) from amazon. I dug right in, intrigued by the storyline and I have to say, I was not let down but I *was* surprised. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting but I mean that in a good way.

"The Bloodlines Project" follows 14 year old Nena as she is about to embark on a new life adventure, a life of bliss that she has earned for doing her part in The Plan. Only things don't go at all as they are supposed to and she is kidnapped on her way to The Heart, where she expected her whole life to change. And they're changing alright, but it's nothing like Nena expected.

I was a little worried about the age of the main character but got over that pretty quick. The book has good pacing and some surprises that will keep you reading!

Gripping Dystopian Tale

'Breeding Plan' is the first novel in 'The Bloodlands Trilogy'. It tells the dystopian tale of teenage girl called Nena who comes to realise she has been lied to her whole life and when she finds out the awful truth she needs to make some hard decisions.

I thought the concept for this novel was intriguing and this was carried out very well. When I started reading I found it an enjoyable adventure tale, getting to know the characters through their reactions to their situations, such as when Nena and her friend are taken prisoner. Once Nena runs off and finds out the terrible truth of what her future has been determined to entail, it becomes a darker read with some truly disturbing moments. For me this made the book go from an easy read to completely gripping very quickly. I couldn't put it down once I got past the halfway mark!

This is a powerfully gripping dystopian story, and it's only the start of Nena's journey. I look forward to the next book. Highly recommended!

A gripping dystopian story

This a good pick for anyone who enjoyed books like The Hunger Games and is hungry for another young adult dystopia. Nena has been raised as a good, obedient worker and thinks that travelling to "the Heart" is the key to her happiness, but when she gets captured by rebels she starts to think she's been lied to. The book has a good plot and moves at a quick pace; the second half in particular gets very tense as Nena realises how dangerous her situation is. And like all good YA books, it's really about trying to decide what to do with your life and standing up against people who are manipulating you. I wish there was a bit more about the Bloodlands universe though - it wasn't as detailed as some other dystopian books - and there are a few loose ends at the end, but hopefully that sort of thing is being saved for the sequel. Give it a read if you're a fan of the genre!

David Salo is a doctoral candidate in linguistics at the University of Wisconsin. He was the primary linguistic consultant to film director Peter Jackson for the Lord of the Rings movie series.

Better than its reputation indicates

I am rather surprised that this books gets such a bad rap in the Tolkienic linguistics community.

Mr. Salo's book is not a presentation of "Sindarin as Tolkien defined it", because such a thing does not really exist. I don't think that Mr. Salo claims it is such. Rather, it is an attempt to synthesize the available evidence from Tolkien's writing into something resembling a complete language. Such an exercise necessarily requires extrapolation and guesswork from the (numerous) gaps in the existing information. I think the result is largely successful, though it is does not (and can not) agree in every detail with Tolkien's work.

The book isn't perfect, but it is thoroughly researched, and he does discuss the available evidence at length. Admittedly, Mr. Salo doesn't spend much time examining evidence contrary to his theories of the language, but I think that is due more to limitations of length rather than any kind of deliberate deception. I do wish he had included more bibliographical references, but he does generally cite his sources and explains his methods, contrary to what some of the reviews state. His examination of Sindarin phonetic development is, I think, unique in its level of detail.

One word of warning: this is not a beginner's book. If you are new to the study of Tolkien's languages, you would be better off starting with one of the simpler online descriptions of Sindarin. Once you have mastered the basics, though, Salo's book is a worthwhile guide for deepening your knowledge of one of Tolkien's elaborate and beautiful linguistic creations.

Though I am far from an expert in Elvish, I find this book very resourceful and useful in my Sindarin studies. It is excellent resource material, and enjoyable to read as well. A bit detailed, but one must learn somehow, after all! For anyone who is seriously looking to expand their Elvish knowledge as I am, I would recommend this book as an accompaniment to the Sindarin course on www.councilofelrond.com . Very useful and enjoyable for any Tolkien fan. Thanks a bunch :)

Erik McCray has spent his life training in the martial arts. As a child, he learned basic fighting techniques from his father, a smoke jumper. From there Erik moved into high school wrestling, competitive judo, jujitsu, kung-fu, and boxing. He also has served as a boxing coach and as a martial arts instructor. Erik lives now is Seattle with his wife and two children.

Cool book

You can't go wrong with a Kane and Wilder book. They are a dynamic writing duo who have been putting out exceptional self-defesne books for years.

Dirty Ground illustrates with easy-to-follow photos how the same techniques can be slightly adjusted for competition, street self-defense and, unique to this book, what they term "the drunkle." The latter refers to your intoxicated uncle, a friend, or your brother, who has crossed the line with so many beers at the holiday dinner or backyard barbecue that he needs a little hands on to get him settled down. You don't want to score a point on him and you don't want to shatter his spine (well, maybe you do but you know you can't).

Equally as good as the variety of techniques they illustrate for all three objectives are the many nuggets of wisdom about fighting, self-defense, hostile people, and applicable stories about old fighters.

I've been training for nearly 50 years in the martial arts and I picked up loads of info from Dirty Ground.

May save your life, money or jail time

Sport, Drunkle, Combat all very different beasts. Sport is the domesticated canine who , once house trained, can be fun, a protector and a constant companion. The Drunkle is the semi ferrel dog who has the potential to hurt you or your loved ones, but also has the ability to learn to get along, if handled correctly. The Combat is the wild dingo who is looking to survive and protect his own, with no thought to what happens to you and yours in the process.�

Martial artists all have some ability to deal when faced with each beast. The challenge is knowing just which beast you are looking at and then being able to use what you know to save yourself. Your local Kungfu gold metal winner may not have the skills to kill in hand to hand combat. Your returning combat soldier may not be able to check back his instincts when the drunk uncle waves a kitchen knife at his teenager at the family bar b que. Being the local collegiate wrestler could get you jail time if you choke out and paralyze the frat boy who is attacking your girl friend.�

Buy this book, study it, train, train and train some more. Be responsible, knowledgable and safe.

Great book on mindset, tactics and skills

The reason I was willing to write a review, and why i recommend you read this book is the first part on mindset. I really enjoyed how the authors put forth their way of thinking. The usual dichotomy of 'sport vs street' in any martial art can be more simply described as sport vs combat.

However, as we all know there are innumerable situations in the middle ground where you don't want to injure someone, nor win points in a competition. The authors of Dirty Ground label this middle ground as Drunkle (after your drunk belligerent uncle). It also applies to quite a few self defense scenarios.

The reality is each situation is different (duh). Each situation needs a response on a force continuum that, for most people, includes verbal deescalation, non lethal attack, and then deadly force. Mouth-fist-OC spray-glock 19.

This book does a great job of explaining all of that in better terms than you will likely find on an internet forum. BJJ guy says "since 99% of all fights always go to the ground, i only do BJJ". Krav Maga type guy says "BJJ is a sport, I'm interested in self defense! the ground is where your head gets kicked in". The reality says "know both, be able to react quickly and violently if the situation calls for it, ALSO (as this book goes into fantastic depth) be able to know when to merely control and stop aggression from uncle jim the drunk.

This book explained that void quite well. Both the BJJ player and Krav Maga ball kicker need to realize that neither are 100% correct. There are different approaches to problems, different skill sets to be had, and specializing in one isnt the correct answer for anything in reality. Be prepared to act quickly, intelligently, and with the proper mindset. Read this book to get a glimpse of how to do that.

Oh, and the rest of the book was good, too. (Some skills demonstrations for the three mindsets - judo sporting, drunkle controlling, and combat injuring)

Maybe good for traveling for those who are already have a ...

Maybe good for traveling for those who are already have a good understand of grammar and able to construct most sentence, but almost useless to people as a quick study purpose reference. I would call it a Traveler's quick lookup reference.

For a booklet named as quick study guide, I am expecting a summary for most high frequency vocabulary, i.e., essential words to construct a sentence, such as modal verbs, pronuns and more adj/adv. For example, numbers, as appeared on the top of this booklet, paradoxically is actually not as highly used as people often might thought. The number 1, 2, 3 are highly used, but number beyond 7 are often ranked after top 1000 high frequency words. Nouns are also not as important for language learning purposes. There are fairly easier to learn compared with verbs/phrase, but help little with regards to express idea.

Needs improvement!

It's not a bad guide but there are too many typos on here (e.g. よんぷん instead of よんふん and the romaji given matches the latter) and there are some entries missing the final letter of the word. There are some weird choices and omissions such as including パイナップル (pineapple) but not much more essential words like たまご (egg).

It would also be much better to include the kanji. Since the kanji is usually just 1-2 characters it should add very little to the space required. I would much rather have the kanji than the romaji pronounciation, since the latter is a distraction and you won't get far in Japanese without knowing hiragana/katakana.

Since it's otherwise a good guide I gave it two rather than one star.

I ordered this just remind myself about basic vocabulary words that sometimes you forget when you are studying Japanese especially if you don't have someone to speak Japanese with this is pretty handy especially if you place it inside of your binder and you can just simply reference back to it and go back and forth and continue studying
