Typical CRC low quality.

Typical of most CRC books printed on the cheapest of paper with no color and just a handful of bad black and white photo's. Way way way overpriced.
The data might be useful but it is old. I just happened to need older information and therefore it was of some use to me.

Great book to have if you want to read serious stuff on dinosaurs

This is an excellent resource for those interested in the weightier matters of dinosaurs. Over 800 pages with over 100 authors, Currie's compilation is still current in 2008.

Set out in encyclopedic fashion, each letter-section has been devoted to a range of topics; not just species of dinosaur. For example, under 'T' the chapters are Taphonomy, Teeth and Jaws, Tendaguru, Tetanurae, Thecodontia, Therizinosauria, Theropoda, Thyreophora, Tooth Marks, Tooth Replacement Patterns, Tooth Serrations in Carnivorous Dinosaurs, Tooth Wear, Trace Fossils, Triassic Period, Troodontidae, Trophic Groups, Trossingen, Two Medicine Formation, Tyrannosauridae.

The chapters on dinosaurs are of the genus, not individual species. This is quite different than most other dinosaur books; which is quite refreshing. After reading mostly about individual dinosaurs in books that have fantastic diagrams or paintings, it is nice to have them compared as a genus in a scientific way without the influence of an artist. For example, the chapter on Tyrannosauridae covers 3 pages with only 2 sketches, one of a Tyrannosaurus skeleton, the other of a labelled skull of a Gorgosaurus. Instead of relying on a bevy of flashy pictures that distract the reader from average writing, the discussion centres on the characteristics of the group as a whole and how they differ from Allosauridae and other therapods in anatomical structure - and what these adaptations mean when constructing a working dinosaur. From the skull to the forearms to feet, the exposition is very thorough. One interesting comparison was made between the length of the neck of Tyrannosaurs, Allosaurs and Ceolophysis as a way to distinguish them.

What impresses me most is the balanced discussion. If there is agreement between experts, this is stated. Also, there is no speculation which leads to something dogmatic - like feathers, but rather, differing viewpoints of scientists working in the field.

I'm very impressed with this book. I have a science degree and the interest to appreciate it. However, it does have a reasonably high level of science - especially technical terms, which renders it unsuitable for under 17/18's who don't have a serious interest in the science of dinosaurs. It also doesn't have many pictures - only 4 lots of colour plates, and even these are not dinosaur art.

It is a great book to have if you want to read serious stuff on dinosaurs.

Finally, up to date information on dinosaurs!

We've all read the bylines: the public loves dinosaurs. And it's true. But we're also not all that discriminating. As a result, many dinosaur books are very out of date. The Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs is a notable exception to this. Each topic is written not only by a paleontologist, but by a dinosaur paleontologist who specializes in that particular subject. The result? A compendium of information that could otherwise be obtained only by attending perfessional meetings for years. And of course, at professional meetings technical laguage is the norm. Anyone want to decipher "the relevance of the arctometatarsilian pes to the phylogenetic analysis of coelurosaurian theropods"..? The Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs is written plainly and clearly. Any interested adult or teenager could master the knowledge within much easier than, say, highschool algerbra. As a student of paleontology, and someone who has attended numerous professional meetings, I can say with confidence that this book will equip any aspiring paleontologist with the knowledge needed to reach the "next leve" of understanding of the dinosaurs.

plenty of information but not for the jargon-shy reader

some facts: dimensions 1.57 x 11.22 x 8.82 inch actually, printed on acid-free paper and made to last, containing 275 articles averaging to 3 pages per article, typically 1 to 4 pages. Apart from the normal table of contents there is a.o. a thematic t.o.c. and a glossary with definitions of 600 specialized terms for the benefit of the general reader. Every article has an extensive reference section to facilitate further reading on the subject. The articles themselves are rather scientific, if you can hack this sentence from page 1 ''... both taxa share maxillae with subvertical ascending rami and cervical vertebrae with hypertrophied epipophyses ...'' then this book is for you. Every 'difficult' word is contained in the glossary, but that still doesn't make it good bedtime reading, even more so because I do not find the book heavily illustrated. The illustrations are mostly b&w drawings, diagrams or photographs, with only a few pages of full color photographs or art-work, I estimate that more than half of the pages have no illustration at all.

Clear and thorough!

This book is very clear for the novice and thorough for the experienced essential oil user. What I really like is that oils like Melaleuca for example do provide emotional support but people really only talk about first aid uses. I will refer to this book again and again. The emotional aspect of disease and health is so greatly denied from a health perspective. Our emotions are deeply effect our overall health and wellness. Uncluttered, clear and concise

I am a retired chemist who teaches math to homeschooled students. Early in my career I was also a math teacher so I'm fortunate to be able to see how the approach to math has changed over the years. Jacob's book is clear and concise with an enormous number of problems after each lesson. I personally believe math is learned by doing problems. It is the constant application of concepts in solving problems that enables understanding to take place; the problems in Jacob's book reinforce the postulates and theorems by applying them in different situations. The problems are also practical, amusing and interesting which certainly helps to engage students.

The layout of the book is very consistent and well organized developing a pattern which makes it easy to thumb backwards to find previous information. Consistency is important in the learning process.

I think many textbooks today make the mistake of trying to sell the subject to the student with glitz and graphics. I believe this makes those books distracting and confusing. Jacob's approach is to state a few postulates or theorems clearly with a few examples. The problem sets demonstrate their use exhaustively.

I typically assign 150 problems to my students a week. This takes about 45-60 minutes a day. We typically go over the answers and discuss the next topic very briefly. Even if the number of assigned problems is cut in half, the arrangement of the problem sets enables competency to be attained. Of course in the world of today where homework is a thing of the past, many educators believe students need to be seduced with fluff but fluff doesn't drive concepts home. Practice makes perfect still works for me. It is sad to see how other countries have surpassed us by adhering to principals of hard work as hard work will almost always guarantee success.

My only complaint about the book is the slight inconsistency in stating definitions, postulates and theorems. When virtually every geometry text including Jacob's belabors conditional statements, I believe every theorem, etc. should be stated explicitly as a conditional statement. I restate them when they stray and have students consider the converse. I find students naturally restate the theorems more casually anyway.

A good source for high school geometry problems.

The third edition of Harold Jacobs' geometry text is an engaging, clearly written, and carefully developed introduction to high school geometry that contains many fascinating problems. As is the case in his excellent algebra text Elementary Algebra, Jacobs finds intriguing ways to introduce and explain each concept. The problems, many of which Jacobs culled from the numerous sources that he cites in his footnotes, are well-chosen. They reinforce the concepts taught in the text by placing the ideas in interesting real-life contexts or puzzles, and they also introduce new ideas. What the book lacks are problems in which the reader gets to practice writing proofs. Instead, almost all the proofs in the exercises are ones in which Jacobs provides the statements and asks the reader to provide the reasons. Consequently, this text is not useful if you want to learn how to write your own proofs.

Jacobs begins the text with a discussion of inductive reasoning and its limitations. He uses this discussion to stress the importance of deductive reasoning and proof before introducing Euclid's postulates. Jacobs covers lines and angles, congruence, inequalities, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, and transformations of the plane before a midterm review. Then he covers area, similarity, right triangle trigonometry, circles, concurrence theorems, regular polygons in relation to the circle, geometric solids, and non-Euclidean geometries before concluding with a final review. Each chapter contains a summary and a chapter review in addition to the problem sets at the end of each section.

Jacobs carefully develops the material, proving each result except in the more intuitive discussions in the chapters on transformations, solids, and non-Euclidean geometries. I found the chapter on concurrence theorems particularly fascinating.

The book contains a glossary, a list of formulas, and a list of postulates and theorems, making it useful as a reference. However, concepts discussed only in the problems are not included in these lists. There are answers to a few of the problems in the back of the text, but not enough of them to be useful if you want to check your answers systematically.

I recommend this book as a supplement rather than a text because it contains many intriguing problems but does not teach the reader how to write proofs. Those students who want to learn how to write proofs should consult the rigorous text Geometry by Edwin E. Moise and Floyd L. Downs, Jr.

I liked this book mostly b rebux it's manga and the art is really good. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is anime obsessed the only downfalls are the misspellings and that it's kind of hard to remember which character is which. I hope there will be a second book
