Lopsided but well-written

"All That Matters" is a summary of Metallica's career up to their newest album "Death Magnetic". The vast majority of the book seems to be collected from other sources. So if you already know everything about Metallica, you probably won't learn anything new. Still it's very well-written and I enjoyed it for the most part.
The big problem with this book is how incredibly lopsided it is towards the first half of Metallica's career. 172 pages are dedicated to the pre-Load days. Only 43 pages are dedicated to Load, Reload, Garage Inc, the Napster controversy, S&M, St. Anger, and Death Magnetic. In other words, 172 pages to cover 1981-1993 (and brief bios of the band members). 43 pages to cover 1994-2008. Even though I didn't like Load and Reload, I still would have liked to learn more about them. There are literally only about 7 pages pertaining to those two albums. This is extremely disappointing seeing as those two albums were such a drastic turning point in Metallica's career. The St. Anger chapter was pretty much just a summary of the "Some Kind of Monster" documentary. Even more information about the Napster lawsuit would have been interesting.
But since most Metallica fans like me love "Kill 'em All" through the Black album, you can walk away satisfied with the depth the author goes to examining that era of the band. I particularly appreciated how much information there was on Cliff Burton. I'd recommend the book to all but the most hardcore of Metallica fans.

Dissecting Metallica

I just found out about Paul Stenning`s 2009 book "All That Matters" earlier this year at an HMV store. I flipped through it being the Metallica fan that I am and I was surprised because this one seemed like an excellent and comprehensive look at the band`s whole career, not just up until the Black Album era. I had previously read one of Paul`s book "Iron Maiden : 30 years of the beast" and enjoyed it but I was a little worried it would be one those unauthorized bios that seemed good but really weren`t. Sadly there aren`t many books worth reading about Metallica, "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death of Metallica`s Cliff Burton" is one that comes to mind, "Metallica and Philosophy" was interesting I thought but as far as I know there has never been a book up until now that did complete justice to the band`s whole career.
Stenning uses a lot of quotes from the band from different eras and people close to the band, he really wrote "All That Matters" as bio and he goes into details and adds a lot of content to those crucial quotes. I find this approach risky but in this case it turned out great because the author knew what he was doing and made great use of the quotes. The quotes themselves are interesting to read and always tend to make you think, yet this book is more than quotes thrown in together for the sake of releasing a book. Stenning goes deeply into the core and the vast elements of the band`s sound and how it changed over the years. There`s a lot of content about the albums themselves and the approach the band recorded them and some great angles on classic songs that are more complex and perhaps more personal than the average fan might think. It`s very clear that the author is a fan himself and believes in the band and what he is writing, he did excellent research on the band to make sure he got everything right, there might be some mistakes but for the most part I think and know that he is right.
"All That Matters" offers an insightful look at the band and the band members` lives. There are bios for each member including Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo, they go in details but not into the little worthless details you know? Each chapters start with a little quote usually from Lars Ulrich which seems to make sense since he is the most vocal and talkative member of the band (or at least that`s how it seems), James Hetfield or occasionally someone else. The only thing I didn`t like is when the author gave his own personal opinion, not that I agree or not, it`s not the point but I believe if you write a biography it should be as objective as possible. Yet those "opinions" take a relatively small place and don`t take away anything from the reading experience, they are not all over the place and really are just occasional.
The author chose to concentrate mainly on the band`s earlier years and albums. For instance, the albums Kill Em` All up to the Black Album are very detailed and well covered whereas the next few albums Load, Reload, Garage Inc and Symphony get considerably less attention. It`s a justifiable choice, after all most fans are not too enthusiastic when it comes to the post Black Album era or even after ...And Justice For All. For this reason it`s quite easy to understand why Stenning concentrated his work on the early years. However when it comes to St-Anger he has more to say, Stenning talks about the band`s state of mind at that time which was an interesting period for Metallica as they had just released what is commonly acknowledged as their worst album and the Some Kind of Monster documentary came out around that time as well. It`s great to get some coverage of the latest Metallica album "Death Magnetic" and the events around it and all. There is also a good portion of the book dedicated to life before Metallica for the members and the band`s beginnings, Dave Mustaine and the No Life Till`Leather demo have a great part in this as well. The tragic death of Cliff is well remembered here and those quotes are really best used to an advantage when talking about Cliff`s death or Cliff in general. Also there`s a lot more coverage on Lars and James than anyone else in the band which was to be expected. Everything that ever affected Metallica is dissected to pieces and looked at brilliantly.
"All That Matters" is worth reading for any Metallica fan, it`s a great informative and pleasant book to read. I can`t make many reproach to the author or this book in general, the book is fantastic for a hardcore fan. I believe it`s really the most complete read there is out there about Metallica. It goes into every detail closely and covers what`s important, it`s truly all that matters about Metallica. Until the band themselves release one big or separate biographies I think this the bestbook about the band. I`m rating this book a solid 4 stars out of five.

I bought this book for my girlfriend because she is a huge Metallica fan. She is very happy with the book, as it covers a lot about the band. Good buy highly recommend.
