Her life is recreated with liberal excerpts from her poetry and by the method of her playing the roles of her father, teacher and friends. Julie Harris played the role on Broadway to great acclaim and won the 1977 Tony Award for Best Actress.

One of my favorite authors and favorite plays ever

One of my favorite authors and favorite plays ever. It is a pleasure to read Emily Dickinson's words knit together in such a harmonious way in this one woman play. I had the privilege to see the pre-shows in Seattle, meet the cast, and be at the Broadway opening-a highlight of my "youth". I am so glad to finally have the play in written form. Read it, enjoy it and better yet, buy a copy of the DVD of the play and see/hear the incredible Julie Harris bring Emily to life.

Worthy of Emily Dickinson's brilliance

This is a first-rate presentation of not only Emily Dickinson the poet, but who she was as a person, and where the poetry came from. She was very intelligent, wise and witty, with deep feelings about what it is to be a human being, no matter what circumstances one finds oneself in. They don't matter so much really, when you trust the heart and take time to marry it to the mind that is yours, and seek the solitude that makes this possible. Julie Harris did a superb job in bringing this play to life on stage, (and available on dvd.) But even to just read this script will touch your heart in unexpected ways and change your view, most likely, of this important American poet. I am also very proud to know that my daughter, an actress, is working on this play in order to perform it as written--a one-woman show--which will be produced in England in March, 2015.

Very sweet but probably too speculative

I enjoyed Luce's efforts to put Emily Dickinson's poems into the context of her life. Can't vouch for its historical accuracy, but it was amusing all the same. An interesting and unusual way to revisit a popular author's work.
