Nice Balance of Technique and Fun

I am a guitar player who uses these kinds of method books to dabble in other stringed instruments (e.g., dobro, lap steel, etc.). Sokolow's Complete Bluegrass Banjo Method provides as good a foundation on the banjo as you can get from a book. While it includes sprinklings of music theory, chord charts, and other concepts, it focuses primarily on the right-hand rolls that are at the heart of bluegrass banjo. It introduces basic rolls and proceeds through accompaniment and solo banjo exercises, using a handful of old-timey songs as the basis for presenting the ideas. He encourages you to sing many of the songs while learning the rolls; not my forte, but still useful for sharpening your technique. As you go along, he injects other little goodies (tag endings, moveable licks) to keep things interesting. My favorite thing is that the supporting CD is listenable! These books generally have a CD that features an infuriating host and cheesy sound. Sokolow is a solid player, sticks with basic acoustic guitar accompaniment, and sings in a pleasing baritone voice (when vocals are involved). What a relief!

Overall, this is a well organized, effective intro banjo method at a great price.

New to the Banjo?

I got a Banjo this past father's day and this book has been awesome. With the accompanying CD, you can progress at your own pace through learning chords, picking rolls, hammering-on, pulling off and playing up the neck. It explains barre chords and chord formations in a really easy-to-understand way and also includes a section on taking care of your banjo. I'm not in any danger of channeling Earl Scruggs anytime soon, but this book has done a lot to give me some good foundational understanding of playing 5-string banjo. Highly recommended for beginners.

Wow! this book does it all

This is the first banjo instruction book I have purchased and, even though I have bought others, I am still very impressed with how he painstainly teaches every lick so clearly. This book makes me feel like I can truely become a banjo musician and not just a strummer. He teaches rolls, back up in regular and up the neck position, melody, and much much more. The CD that comes with it is super. The only thing I wish is that he would play some of the songs more slowly, but at least the tab is extremely accurate and allows for the learner to really "get it" over time.

Story is perfect

Saved in my Kindle’s favorites and read repeatedly. Na�ve daughter (one of my fave themes) convinced that she can have her way with her stepdad without him even noticing. She ends up getting exactly what she wants (and clearly what he wants) just the way she wants it. Of course, Heath is not completely oblivious, you can surmise that by reading the story. The whole idea of the "na�ve daughter tricking Daddy" stories is about the young girl thinking she's getting him to unknowingly satisfy her needs while not "upsetting him" for being used. Here you can tell (just like Heath can) that Lauralyn is trying to be sneaky by taking advantage of him while he's watching TV, so that's why Heath lets her continue to think that he's so thoroughly engrossed so as not to discourage her from continuing. That's why he doesn't really respond verbally (much). Yes, this premise is used in a number of stories, it's the execution that makes the difference. In the end everybody is happy (and sated).

Pretty standard fare from this author

Kelsey Charisma delivers another in the 'Daddy' mold, so if you like that genre you probably already read her stories.

I guess the only thing that's kind of new here is Heath is a less-than-perfect man (as opposed to the "hot daddies" you usually see in this brand of erotica).

That, and his seeming to totally oblivious to Lauralyn's activities, once she decides to go for it. (Maybe he was faking to prolong the illusion. I don't know.)

Lots of vigorous thrusting. Lots of yelling.

Doesn't really stand out from the crowd.

I should have listened to the previous review of this book. I like this author and the books have been good but this one I don't know what to think. There is little to no interaction verbally between the two characters. The fact that she can have sex with him and he not say anything to her or acknowledge what she is doing I don't think so. Just not believable at all.

About the Author
As a Senior Program Associate at WestEd since 1999, Bonnie Benard is responsible for developing applications of resilience and youth development research for the Health and Human Development Program. She had primary responsibility for the development of the California Department of Education's Healthy Kids Survey's Resilience and Youth Development Module, which surveys students throughout California on their perceptions of supports and opportunities in their schools, homes, communities, and peer groups.

During her career, Benard has written widely, provided training, and made presentations for national and international audiences in the field of prevention and resilience/youth development theory, policy, and practice. From 1990 through 1996, Benard was a Research Associate at WestEd's Western Center for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities, where she published Fostering Resiliency in Kids: Protective Factors in the Family, School, and Community (1991), a document credited with introducing resiliency theory and application to the fields of prevention and education. In 1992, she received the Award of Excellence from the National Prevention Network; in 1995, the Paul Templin Award for Service by Western Center for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities; in 1997, the Spirit of Crazy Horse Award from the Black Hills Reclaiming Youth seminars for her advocacy of resilience and strength-based practice; and in 2002, the Paul D. Hood Award from WestEd for Distinguished Contribution to the Field.

Benard received a BA in English and an MSW, both from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Researchers: read this book first

I'm a doctoral student studying resilience education. I have read hundreds of books and articles related to resilience. I wish I had known to read this book first because it carefully presents the evolution over time of the three stages of resilience work. Knowing these stages has helped me sort out what seemed to be contradictions in this field. The new attitude of positive psychology is truly a new mindset and makes resilience education a mainstream topic that is appropriate at any school. Overall, this book has carefully organized material and is well written.

For a more practical how-to book, also get "Resiliency in action: Practical Ideas for Overcoming Risks and Building Strengths in Youth, Families and Communities, 2nd ed." (Henderson, 2007) which Benard co-authored.

It has some good information, but few actual suggestions on what to do. The majority of the book was just theory, I wanted more tangible suggestions that I could follow through with.

Good stuff, as always. I had the book that follows this one, so this allowed me to fill in some blanks. The Smoke Jensen books move along without dragging like so many western writers. They're always worth the read.
