Intriguing ideas

Interesting ideas. I'm not sure I'm buying it, but love playing 'what if' and I think Michael has at the very least raised some fascinating questions about our collective past. The stone circles in SA are definitely an enigma, and no one else has come close to explaining them. I like his views on our current systems and his ideas for improving our lot. Downfall...some big leaps made on little evidence. He based a lot on Z Sitchin's interpretations of Sumerian texts, and doesn't adequately address the critiques on those translations and the niggling rumours that they are exaggerations, full of mistakes or presented to suit Sitchin's theory. However Michael is very authentic, very passionate on his subject, and I sense a truth behind a lot of what he says even if some of the specifics are a bit stretched. A great read that gets you thinking. I will continue to read his work, and appreciate not only his efforts to uncover truth, but also to expose corruption in our present system and suggestions for alternatives.

I just finished reading “The Lost Book of Enki”, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I credit
the last chapter of Michael Tellinger's book (“Slave Species of the Gods”) as the key
that made it possible for me to comprehend this facinating story.
My skill is not language arts, and I failed in earlier attempts to read “The 12th Planet” or LBOE.
I am amazed that just a few years ago, I could not follow the story in “The 12th Planet” nor could I tolerate the the language in LBOE, and now I am fascinated at the ability of the simple language in LBOE to communicate so efficiently and easily. I consider SSOTG to be a condensation of LBOE. Thank you Michael Tellinger for unlocking this most-important story for me.

Claims his conclusions are absolutely supported by rather feeble evidence. Too much rant, not enough info. Found myself skimming large sections that were repetitive rant. Some interesting info that could indicate the author's theory is right, but not iron clad.

About the Author
Frederick L. Jones is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He received an M.B.A. at the University of Maryland, and a D.B.A. at Boston University. His research interests include information systems, auditing and financial accounting, and he has related publications in the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and the Journal of Accounting Literature. Dr. Jones is a CPA and has professional experience in internal auditing and public accounting. He is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPAs, Beta Alpha Psi, and Beta Gamma Sigma. Professor Jones lives with his wife and daughter in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where he enjoys kayaking, hiking and learning to play the piano.

Dasaratha V. Rama is a Professor of Accounting and Information Systems at Florida International University. Prior to this, she was on the faculty of Texas A&M International University, The Univer�sity of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and Bentley College. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Her teaching interests include ac�counting information systems, systems analysis and design, and project management (delete database management). She has published in a wide variety of accounting and information systems journals, including Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Account�ing Horizons, Issues in Accounting Education, ACM Transactions on Information Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Communications. Dr. Rama (changed to past tense) has served as the chair of the Teaching & Curriculum (T&C) Section of the American Accounting Association. She has also served as the webmaster of the T&C section and as the chair of the service-learning committee and active learning committee of the T&C section. She was an Engaged Scholar with Campus Compact under a grant funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. She lives with her husband and two sons in Weston, Florida. When she is not busy with her two boys, she enjoys books and classical music.

Good overview of how systems work

I was looking for a book that described in depth how the various cycles (e.g., Revenue Cycle) worked in conjunction with the various tables. Does an outstanding job with in-depth details where you not only learn the steps, but how the system is updated at each stage. Good material on controls, especially application controls that need to be built into the system. Normally I never look at case studies and assignments, but in this book, they were useful.

Very Basic and Naieve Book

I bought this book hoping to find a good reference in accounting information system with a focus on processes, yet I found a nieve, elementery book that is more of a help to a student just starting to learn information systems. The star rate is only because I have a book which might be helpful to any student having no clue about Information System. The business process approach is a big word to be part of the title as it is far beyond the real process and relating information system as I knew it.

Product was as described. Maybe a little bit better in quality. Shipped as scheduled. No hold ups. Recommend seller. By the way stay away from maluprynce. The person did not even ship the book I ordered. I wish that this seller had the other book I needed for class. But yeah expect the product shipped to your destination on time if ordering from this seller.

Articles by the guy you want to go to lunch with.

This is the first positive review I'm giving while still reading a book. First of all, to fully enjoy the book I feel like I have to read it in tiny tiny chunks to let the content sink in, thus it's taking forever to get through it. The second reason is that it has been so consistent in writing level and quality of content that I am certain it will continue that way until the end.

In a nutshell, this book is a series of blog posts, written and curated by a known software persona. It deals with everything a software developer is likely to encounter during their career: Technical , managerial and business issues. All subjects are treated with a writing style that cuts to the heart of the matter with light humor and strong metaphors.

There are two reasons that this book doesn't deserve the fifth star:
1) Most of the articles were written over 10 years ago.
2) I am not entirely sure whether Joel's ideas seem so compelling because he is right or because he knows how to sound like he's right.

For these reasons I try to force myself to take everything with a grain of salt, a somewhat fun-spoiling effort.

If you've been in the software business for some years, this book will speak to you. Get it, enjoy it, but don't take it too seriously.

A required book in your library

I've enjoyed reading the online version for several years now. Joel has a unique down to earth view on computers, programming and business that makes his blog worth reading. He believes in using the right tool for the job, and not just always using a hammer because you have one handy.

There are a lot of books and web sites on how business, software, computers and programming should be conducted. Most fail to understand the basics of what they are talking about because the writer has a theory that he thinks will solve everything. But the theory takes on a life of its own, and becomes more important than observed reality. Just the trap many political, religious and self-help demagogues fall into. They become pie-in-the-sky dreamers and less attached to normal life.

He seems to have a similar, if slightly younger perspective, on the field as Richard P. Gabriel who wrote his now famous "Worse is Better" essay about 10-15 years ago. Another writer/programmer he reminds me of is Paul Graham.

Joel has not tried to generalize his very specific observations into a unified whole theory of all programming and computer management. But that doesn't prevent you, the home reader, from making those generalizations yourself. You may have to prevent yourself from thinking too much of it, least the Law of Leaky Abstractions take over. Joel gives one a good place to start.

I've used his "Law of Leaky Abstractions" in discussions I had many times.

Also, when I was thinking for a job I used his guide to interviewing when talking to perspective employers. Sure, he wrote it from employers to use, but I was able to easily enough reserve it's principals and applied them to finding out info about the company I was interviewing at. This allowed me find out what the bad interviewers really wanted to know when they didn't know what they wanted. It allowed me to show that I was smart and could get things done to the people who interviewed me. And since I'm employed again it must have worked.

Some wheat, a lot of chaff

I think the essays span a period of several years ending in the early 2000's. Therefore some of them are very dated, like several chapters on how to write highly detailed specs and schedules before starting a project.

Some of the articles on interviewing, incentives, wireframing, and engineering were thought-provoking and still relevant, but the self-aggrandizing and pervasive Microsoft bias wore me out after a while.

A Framework for Investing

I have read most well regarded investment books of all time and I have worked in financial markets for over 15 years. I don't know the author. In my humble opinion this is a special book that every investor, whether novice or professional can benefit from. I have read it twice now and made notes, and now written my first Amazon book review. I have not been prompted to do any of those actions before despite reading and gaining valuable knowledge from great books by Greenwald, Marks, Graham, Fisher and many other great investing authors. The author defines investing as a 'problem of choice as opposed to defining it as a problem of chance'. The book provides an analytical framework for controlling emotions and biases using the principle of negation, turning investing into a negative art. I found many insights in this book that will help with my investing. Real world company examples are provided and enough information is provided for practical application. I would have liked to have seen more real world application examples with different outcomes and associated discussion however I presume the author had page constraints. At 330 pages there is already a lot of valuable information packed in the book. The author mentions plans for a second edition. I for one will look forward to its publication.

No cognitive failures here

I have now been in the investing business for more than 15 years and rarely does an investing book surprise me in a good way but Book of Value by Anurag Sharma managed to do just that. I have become quite skeptical of academics that teach investing because they don’t seem to grasp the realities of the investment process. This book avoids those cognitive failures and puts its readers on the right track in vital areas such as investor psychology, diversification, and how to determine a proper discount rate. All areas that cause the vast majority of investment failures that I encounter. I would recommend this books for new investors, those who aren’t successfully investing currently, institutional investors, and investing consultants.

I own well over 200 books on the subject of investing/history of markets; from well-known modern classics like The Most Important Thing to forgotten gems like The Money Game. It’s been a good while since I’ve picked up such a refreshing, well-written and important book that truly adds value to the existing breadth of literature on the subject. So many redundant books on investing out there; this is certainly not one of those!

This book does not introduce entirely new concepts but does offer key building blocks that so many behavioral finance and traditional finance books seem to miss. The vast majority of investors would likely serve themselves well if they focused on the investment principals laid in just handful of books and simply reread them. I've not recommended the same group of books to different investors but one I almost always recommended is "Your money and Your Brain, by Jason Zwieg. The Book of Value is now on a list of two I plan to recommend to just about every investor.

very weak, dry, and disorganized book

This book is not worth paper it was printed on, pretty muchlike the rest of the books about Freddie Mercury. I guess, it isespecially difficult to write about him, because when he died, he did not leave an autobiography or, at least, some decent interviews. It seems like he rarely answered questions seriously and did not really like talking to the press. Nevertheless, everyone familar with Queen, must know that he was, indeed, "living on the edge" in all respects. So, this book does not say anything new or anything coherent. It lacks purpose, strength, and accuracy that should be present, when writing about such enormous genius like Freddie Mercury. Listening to his music, his own statements (however rare), and his jokes still beats reading lame bios about him.

Merely a chronology of concerts. Poorly written.

This book does not satisfy the word "biography". All it does it tell about concert after concert. Dates are referred to in months only, so one never knows what year the author is talking about. Last two chapters are the only ones worth reading, except that Magic Johnson is referred to as a famous "baseball player". Author didn't do much research. Also, lots of spaces between words in the last chapters and several blank pages in the back to apparently take up space. I wanted to read about Freddie Mercury, not a calendar of "events". Waste of money. Saw a better bio on VH1 on cable. Shame on the author.

I have bought every book I can find on him, and one of the most personal one about was written by his Lover Jim Hutton, it isnt easy to get your hands on either, i know it upset many people becasue it was more like a kiss and tell, but if you want to know what Freddie's last few years was like even up to the moment he died then find the book and read it.

I can relate. I forgived someone

Loved It! We're all human. We all make mistakes. As long as we learn from them and don't relive them. I feel once our heart is broken we are so quick to move on and try to heal the pain but in reality we need to heal ourselves before jumping into another relationship. I learned that the hard way.

The importance of being earnest.

Almost every woman secretly wants to know a man who can emote. The kind of guy who isn't afraid to be honest about what he feels, to cry when we touch his heart, to make us laugh at his mistakes because he is so loyal and human. Derrick Jaxn has written a book about such a man and I have to confess the book was not what I was expecting. Mr. Jaxn has a writing style that is easy to absorb as well as be amused by. His protagonist's often flawed but common sense approach to his life experiences are believable and understandable however wrong or misguided they are. His enthusiastic and humorous approach endears us to him. He manages to make us care deeply about him even when we know he is in for a world of pain whether or not it's well deserved. The other characters in the story didn't resonate with me in the same way our hero did. There was often a one-dimensional quality to the actions of some key characters that made me want to understand them better. At times that lack of connection I felt with a supporting character's motivations or story made the book lag for me a bit in a few places. The ending is open-ended but in the best possible way. I'm interested in what's next for Shawn but whatever it is I'm sure it will be a heartfelt journey.

Amazing, fun to read, and real.

I actually went to school with Derrick and he asked me to leave a review as a male and of course I obliged. I read this book in a coupe of hours and honestly it packs more true scenarios about trying to become a decent man at Tuskegee University. Like Derrick I grew up in a poor one parent household and I appreciated the shout out as the one white guy on campus lol. The truth of coming up with nothing and not really anyone having your back and the ones that do try and take it back from you, is a normal thing in our community. Likewise, his way of dealing with his first break up and playing the game is exactly how most men deal with the system. They start out young and na�ve, get played, then play everyone until that special someone comes along. It was just a part of growing up. The relationship problems and how he kept reemphasizing putting in work to show appreciation is absolutely relevant. Just the culmination of everything he experienced brought me back to our college days and how the things that young men go through in the stages of becoming a man mentally, physically, and emotionally really gave me a new perspective. I've recommended this book to all of my friends and even random people I see just reading things. It's a fun and easy read and I can't truly say if it's entirely true or true enough because a lot of the scenarios sound familiar haha. Just ask the author. God Bless.
