Amazon Exclusive: A Conversation Between Kristin Hannah and Emily Giffin

Emily Giffin (left) is the author of five New York Times bestselling novels, including Something Borrowed, which has been adapted as a major motion picture that will be in theaters in summer 2011. A graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of Virginia School of Law, she lives in Atlanta with her family.

Kristin Hannah (right) is the New York Times bestselling author of eighteen novels, including Winter Garden. She is a former lawyer turned writer and the mother of one son. She and her husband live in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii.

Kristin Hannah: Well, first, I have to say, Emily, that I am just the tiniest bit irritated with you. When I got the call to do this interview, I was thrilled, to say the least. It came at a really busy time for me--right after the holidays and we all know how crazy that is--and my work in progress was giving me fits. Then I picked up Heart of the Matter, and lost myself. No more writing, no more cooking, no getting my hair done or reading my email. Once I started the story I literally couldn't put it down. Brava, girlfriend, I say. Your characters are so real and compelling, and they always say exactly the right thing. With so much honest emotion, I just have to ask how much of your work comes from your own life?

Emily Giffin: It never fails to thrill me when someone responds to one of my novels--especially when it's another writer. Writers understand the alchemy involved in making up something from nothing. And I just finished your book, Night Road, and I found it so emotional, so moving, and so terrifying--especially since I have three young children who will someday be teenagers. In terms of how much does my work come from my own life, I would say that I'm absolutely inspired by people, places, conversations, relationships, and issues that I observe, and that the "what if" part of my novel is very much inspired by these things in my life. But the details of my plots and the specifics of my characters come from my own head. How about you, Kristin? I'll ask you the million-dollar question that every author gets asked: where do you get your ideas?

Kristin: Ah, the idea question. I don't want to sound coy, but the truth is, I don't quite know. It's the most magical part of the process for me. I'm a pretty analytical gal, and I approach writing in the same just-the-facts-ma'am way I approach most things. I need to find an issue that engages me on an intellectual level, and then I need to marry that curiosity with a kind of passion. I need to feel genuinely passionate about each story before I ever write a word, and I have to actually have something to say. It takes me at least a year to research and write a novel, and so I have to really adore each part of it--the characters, setting, story. Most of all, it has to make me feel something genuine. That's really the most important component. Usually it begins with a single "what if" question--what if you discovered your mother had a whole secret life about which you knew nothing (Winter Garden) or what if your husband were accused of a crime you believed he hadn't committed (True Colors)--and then I write and re-write until the characters seem as real to me as old friends.

Kristin: I'm amazed by how much we have in common. We're both moms, both lawyers, both lived in London for a time. You're like a younger, cooler version of me. How did you make the transition from lawyer to writer, and do you think you'll ever practice law again?

Emily: I would hardly say I'm cooler than you, Kristin! I hear you live in Hawaii part time! What is cooler than that? I made the transition from lawyer to writer because I was so miserable being a lawyer that I needed some escape from the day-to-day of it. And inventing stories was that escape. I can say, without hesitation, that I will never practice law again. Would you? What kind of law did you practice, and for how long? What did you find appealing (or discouraging) about law? Did you find that it gave you fodder for any of your novels?

Kristin: Honestly, I have met very few lawyers who don't say that what they really want to do is write. Like you, I can say with certainty that I will never practice law again. Not that anyone would want me to. But I still keep my Bar membership up...just in case this whole writing thing doesn't work out. And yes, in the past few years, I have finally begun to put some of that law school education to work for me. I find that I'm really enjoying adding legal issues to my work. Of course, I have to talk to real lawyers to make sure I'm getting it right...

From Publishers Weekly
Jennifer Wiltsie's warm, emotionally expressive voice immediately draws listeners into Giffin's story and makes them sympathize with Rachel, whose growing attraction to her best friend's fianc eventually develops into a guilt-ridden affair. Wiltsie handles the other characters deftly; Rachel's best friend, Darcy, is especially vivid (and hilariously shallow and self-centered), and Rachel and Dex's romance is portrayed with exceptional sensitivity. This is definitely one to bring along in the beach bag this summer. A St. Martin's hardcover. (May)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Chick lit is already a crowded genre, but Giffin's compelling debut truly stands out. It is as much about the meaning and value of friendship as it is about love, and it takes some risky chances that pay off. Rachel is celebrating her thirtieth birthday with her friends, including her lifelong best friend, Darcy, and Dex, Rachel's handsome friend from law school and Darcy's fiance. One thing leads to another and Rachel ends up in bed with Dex. Suddenly, all of her repressed feelings for him rush to the forefront, and Dex says he feels the same. But thoughts of Darcy nag at Rachel. Perfect, pretty Darcy has always gotten everything she's wanted, as well as things that Rachel wanted, like her admission to her first-choice college. But Rachel and Dex can't deny their attraction, and Rachel wonders if they might possibly have a real future together. It's a gamble to cast her heroine in a potentially unsympathetic light, but Giffin manages to create empathy for her likable characters without cheapening the complexity of their situation, making for a genuinely winning tale. Blah at its best
By CaspersMommy33
Well ... I purchased and read the book based entirely on the reviews I read here on Amazon. So many people stated they felt a kinship with Rachel and were rooting for her and Dex to end up together, mainly because of Darcy's selfishness and her "the world revolves around me" attitude. So I went into the book expecting to align with those feelings. However, I did not feel the same AT ALL. Rather, here was my take on the main characters. ***** SPOILERS *****

Rachel. So much of the book was spent comparing Rachel's lack of just about everything (looks, personality, charm, boyfriends, friends, clothes, style, etc) to Darcy's superiority in all of the above. To me, it sounded like Rachel was constantly whining throughout that she never did and never would measure up to Darcy. The entire time I was thinking to myself, "why did you keep Darcy as your best friend all these years if you held this deep rooted resentment toward her for things neither of you could control?" Rachel, quite simply, was a debbie downer. There was even a part in the book when Rachel was thinking to herself and wondering if Darcy would go so far as to "pop some pills to make the pain go away" aka suicide .... I mean, really? We're supposed to feel bad for THIS woman? Uh, no. Her insecurities get no compassion from me.

Darcy. Yes, she could be self-centered and materialistic. However, she was never the complete witch I expected her to be made out to be. At least, not until the last couple of chapters of the book, but even then she only did the same thing to Rachel and Dex that they did to her. Sure, she made a few comments throughout that were tasteless. Yes, she was engrossed in her appearance and all things Darcy. But she was also a very good friend to Rachel. I actually liked Darcy throughout the book and admired many of her characteristics.

Dex. He was with Darcy for SEVEN years. After ALL that time he suddenly decides she's not what he wants and instead he wants her lesser attractive, insecure, frumpy best friend that he actually new first from law school? Sorry, I'm not buying it. It just doesn't make sense. At all. Dex strikes me as someone with absolutely no dimension to him at all.

All in all, I felt that Ethan and Rachel had a great vibe and I expected something to develop there, but of course nothing came of that. And on that note, what kind of friend (Rachel) flies to London to visit an old friend (Ethan) and on the second night goes on a date with a stranger (James)? Was I the only person that found that to be incredibly rude?

Sleeping with your friends man. This is entertaining
By Sara K.
I loved this book! I thought it was entertaining and also left me wanting more with every page I turned. It was a little risque considering this is about someone who falls in love with her best friends man.its a book so I don't want to talk too much about the story line and give anything away. After reading this first book I HAD to buy the follow up book. I'm usually more into true crime books but this had enough entertainment and suspense that I wasn't expecting. I truly enjoyed this author and will look for more books to read

Meh.
By Razzy2001
I overall didn't really enjoy this book. The main character was sleeping with her best friend's fianc, that's a complete no-go in my book. I think the only thing that I really enjoyed/appreciated about some of this was while she was at war with herself, not able to stay OR go, analyzing her friendship with Darcy. Most of us, at some time or another, have had a friend that we love but maybe isn't always good for us or a good friend in return. Per than that, this book was kind of a meh for me.

Bounce, by Matthew Syed

Why have all the sprinters who have run the 100 meters in under ten seconds been black?

What's one thing Mozart, Venus Williams, and Michelangelo have in common?

Is it good to praise a child's intelligence?

Why are baseball players so superstitious?

Few things in life are more satisfying than beating a rival. We love to win and hate to lose, whether it's on the playing field or at the ballot box, in the office or in the classroom. In this bold new look at human behavior, award-winning journalist and Olympian Matthew Syed explores the truth about our competitive nature—why we win, why we don't, and how we really play the game of life. Bounce reveals how competition—the most vivid, primal, and dramatic of human pursuits—provides vital insight into many of the most controversial issues of our time, from biology and economics, to psychology and culture, to genetics and race, to sports and politics.

Backed by cutting-edge scientific research and case studies, Syed shatters long-held myths about meritocracy, talent, performance, and the mind. He explains why some people thrive under pressure and others choke, and weighs the value of innate ability against that of practice, hard work, and will. From sex to math, from the motivation of children to the culture of big business, Bounce shows how competition provides a master key with which to unlock the mysteries of the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Syed, sportswriter and columnist for the London Times, takes a hard look at performance psychology, heavily influenced by his own ego-damaging but fruitful epiphany. At the age of 24, Syed became the #1 British table tennis player, an achievement he initially attributed to his superior speed and agility. But in retrospect, he realizes that a combination of advantages—a mentor, good facilities nearby, and lots of time to hone his skills—set him up perfectly to become a star performer. He admits his argument owes a debt to Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, but he aims to move one step beyond it, drawing on cognitive neuroscience research to explain how the body and mind are transformed by specialized practice. He takes on the myth of the child prodigy, emphasizing that Mozart, the Williams sisters, Tiger Woods, and Susan Polgar, the first female grandmaster, all had live-in coaches in the form of supportive parents who put them through a ton of early practice. Cogent discussions of the neuroscience of competition, including the placebo effect of irrational optimism, self-doubt, and superstitions, all lend credence to a compelling narrative; readers who gobbled up Freakonomics and Predictably Irrational will flock to this one. Review
“Sport is often used as an analogy for business, education, and personal relationships. In this insightful and entertaining book, Matthew Syed takes us a step deeper into the world of sports, showing us how much we can learn about our own behavior.” (Dan Ariely, New York Times bestselling author of Predictably Irrational)

“A cutting edge dissection—and ultimate destruction—of the myth of innate talent in the pursuit of excellence. Syed synthesizes his evidence with the precision of an academic, writes with the fluidity of a journalist, and persuades with the drive of a sportsman. Read this book.” (Mark Thomas, Professor of Evolutionary Genetics, University College London)

“Intellectually stimulating and hugely enjoyable at a stroke. . . . Challenged some of my most cherished beliefs about life and success.” (Jonathan Edwards, Olympic Gold Medal Winner in the Triple Jump)

“Compelling and, at times, exhilarating—Bounce explains high achievement in sport, business, and beyond.” (Michael Sherwood, Chief Executive, Goldman Sachs International)

More useful than Outliers
By TMA
It's hard to resist comparing this book to Malcolm Gladwell's The Outliers. In The Outliers Gladwell helped spread the fame of the work of Anders Ericsson, FSU expert on how people acquire expert intelligence. Indeed, the phrase "10,000 hours" is now so ubiquitous it has become a cliche, although people often forget that it refers not just to practice but to STRUCTURED practice.

While The Outliers excels in its writing and infotainment value, Bounce seems more instructive. It's hard to finish Bounce and not feel like there is a lot more you could do if you just applied yourself. Syed mixes personal experience, anecdotes of others, and empirical data to hammer home the point that living with a "growth" mindset is richly rewarding.

Syed does an excellent job of explaining how some people continue to reach new thresholds in their pursuits while many others plateau early. I often give this book as a gift to nieces, nephews, and friends' children who are entering college, telling them I wish I could have read (and believed) this book when I was their age.

one of the most important books I've read
By Just Me
I read a lot, a lot, and this is one of the most significant books I have read. Anyone striving for high performance, in any field, as well as anyone raising or teaching children should read this book. I've been very interested in reading one of the books which are based, at least to a degree, on the work of Anders Ericsson and purposeful practise being more important than talent you are born with. Reviews of the other books, such as Talent Is Overrated by Geoff Colvin, The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell have put me off. Each book seems to take a somewhat different view of the importance of various aspects that have been shown to lead to superior performance -- purposeful practice and opportunity (such as having a good coach available) being the primary aspects. Bounce also delves deep into the psychology of people who persist enough to become superior performers. There are many psychological points, which anyone can develop, which lead to someone bouncing back from difficulty and doing well. With practise being so important to superior performance, you must have persistance or you won't get in the practice.

Highly recommended. I've already given it as a gift and will be giving out more.

Encouragement for aspiring musicians of any age
By The Sideman
The talent myth pervades our thinking in various forms, e.g., musicians, leaders, etc. are "born--not made." While one should acknowledge the existence of those rare individuals will seemingly superhuman aptitudes, according to the author, most "experts" in whatever field reach the pinnacle through a combination of factors--factors within the reach of mere mortals! This is good news and awfully encouraging to anyone willing to obtain the proper tutelage and engage in "purposeful practice" over the long haul. This book lit a fire under me to develop a plan and "do the time" in purposeful practice in order to master the guitar. Woodshed, here I come!

How the Kingdom Within You Becomes the Voice Of Yahveh, by Jovon Lately

This very important work is the first book written by Jovon Lately; he has been given new spiritual eyes and the ability to take us out of this mundane consciousness that lingers over us like a shadow or fog, blocking our true purpose and mission. One who can use the ‘Watchful Eye’ also has an ‘Obeying Ear’ and is enabled to see and hear the Holy Spirit speaking from within your mind and without your intellect. The Kingdom is spread out upon the earth, and it is also within us, if we are able to persevere and awaken our divine eyes and listen with open ears. This creates in us a servant of truth who can stay in motion in the Galilee state of activity which is a ‘standing while moving’ event. Paul referred to this as ‘dying and rising daily’ - this ‘Standing while Moving’ is the ability to be in the Kingdom while living your daily physical life in the earth, thereby joining the two realms together, when you are able to do this your tribulations and sufferings become springboards to catapult us into higher levels of faith and understanding during the terrifying situations we encounter in the world today. For you can personally know and be known by the ‘One to Lean On’ (our Messiah) to see what is ruling over us from the inside so that we can truly answer the Father when he says: “Adam Where Are You?” We will be able to finally say again: “Where you are!”

Jovon Lately born 1976 in Detroit, Michigan was raised by his mother, grandmother, and two aunts. Mr. Lately completed his education in Detroit Michigan, and fought through the adversity of gangs and intercity violence that continued to escalate. He was struggling to find his way in the world and also survive the gang activity all around him. His mother’s boyfriend, who had also given him a brother introduced knowledge of the Holy true Memorial Name of the heavenly father. This Mighty Name was vouchsafe Jovon at the age of six years; which he grew up knowing but from embarrassment of being harassed by his peers who never heard of this name, he kept it quiet and held it deep down inside him. He didn’t know he was already developing another life within. He went to visit Ohio, after seeing and experiencing horrible things he left Ohio to return home. The young man, Jovon, his mother and aunts had encouraged was gone, a new version lived now. He was now two different people, the young boy who held the Father’s Name in his heart secretly, and the man who had not only saw but tasted great evils. Little did Jovon know, but his loving uncle would later be taken by diabetes, the same diabetes that plagued his whole family and was responsible for the deaths of his grandmother and mother. But before the death of his mother and grandmother, his younger brother at the age of 24 was taken away due to a critical life threatening medical condition that required him to live with a shunt in his brain for over 10 years. Jovon, growing up in a family that suffered many tragic financial and medical situations, he began to change even more from that fun loving creative young man he could only dimly remember. His outlook on life began to waver back and forth as he continually readjusted his own perspectives trying to survive and find his place in this world. As he matured he found his passion in helping and protecting people; he decided to get in the field of security. He was trained by specialist in various styles of martial arts which he used in his performance of various functions in security. Looking at the way the world was and observing friends he knew being killed in the streets, even being shot himself on the treacherous streets of Detroit, he and his best friend who grew up together, started to question their existence and the veracity of the BIBLE. Mr. Lately received stupendous knowledge of Yahveh Elohim and the divine pattern of the universe firsthand.

I enjoyed reading about the ideas presented in this book
By Creative Light
During these turbulent times, it is important that we allow ourselves to be open-minded to ideas, actively pursue the truth, and allow the holy spirit to provide us with the understanding, guidance and wisdom to withstand evil. I allowed the holy spirit to guide me while I read this book. I enjoyed reading about the ideas presented in this book, particularly about the reality of Satan and how to protect ourselves from the adversary. Without knowledge of the ideas presented in this book, it seems as if we are really leaving ourselves vulnerable for the adversary to slaughter us. After reading this book, I have taken a more active stance in daily prayer and Biblical study for my protection. I cannot wait to read the books he suggested at the end of his book. This is a good book and a must read!

The Referral Engine: Teaching Your Business to Market Itself, by John Jantsch

The small business guru behind Duct Tape Marketing shares his most valuable lesson: how to get your customers to do your best marketing for you.

The power of glitzy advertising and elaborate marketing campaigns is on the wane; word- of-mouth referrals are what drive business today. People trust the recommendation of a friend, family member, colleague, or even stranger with similar tastes over anything thrust at them by a faceless company.

Most business owners believe that whether customers refer them is entirely out of their hands. But science shows that people can't help recommending products and services to their friends-it's an instinct wired deep in the brain. And smart businesses can tap into that hardwired desire.

Marketing expert John Jantsch offers practical techniques for harnessing the power of referrals to ensure a steady flow of new customers. Keep those customers happy, and they will refer your business to even more customers. Some of Jantsch's strategies include:

-Talk with your customers, not at them. Thanks to social networking sites, companies of any size have the opportunity to engage with their customers on their home turf as never before-but the key is listening.

-The sales team is the most important part of your marketing team. Salespeople are the company's main link to customers, who are the main source of referrals. Getting them on board with your referral strategy is critical.

-Educate your customers. Referrals are only helpful if they're given to the right people. Educate your customers about whom they should be talking to.

The secret to generating referrals lies in understanding the "Customer Referral Cycle"-the way customers refer others to your company who, in turn, generate even more referrals. Businesses can ensure a healthy referral cycle by moving customers and prospects along the path of Know, Like, Trust, Try, Buy, Repeat, and Refer. If everyone in an organization keeps this sequence in mind, Jantsch argues, your business will generate referrals like a well-oiled machine.

This practical, smart, and original guide is essential reading for any company looking to grow without a fat marketing budget.

From Publishers Weekly
As lean times force businesses to reduce advertising and marketing budgets, more and more companies are trying to develop new clients through word-of-mouth referrals. Jantsch (Duct Tape Marketing) champions such an approach, asserting that many widely referred businesses do very little when it comes to traditional advertising and that happy customers and actively engaged partners account for a great deal of their efforts. According to Jantsch, referral behavior is a primal activity rooted in our survival instinct and satisfying our need to connect with other people and mint social currency. Jantsch offers practical solutions on how to build a powerful referral engine by developing a systematic, consistent, and replicable approach and exploiting content, using social networking, and building strategic partnerships. He illustrates his points with examples from such companies as work clothing manufacturer Carhartt with its Tough Jobs blog; Southwest Airlines, which relies heavily on hiring the right people to be the champions of the brand; and TerraCycle, a recycling company whose nontraditional business practices generated word-of-mouth attention. A swift, appealing read and a thorough primer on the power of letting your products and customers speak for themselves. (May)

Pays for itself about 1000x
By Josh Steimle
The best book I've read on how to get referrals from existing customers. I run a digital marketing agency and after reading this I bought a copy for each of my account managers and we've seen them bringing a lot more value to clients and to my agency as a result.

Recipe for Marketing Success
By Joy
There's nothing totally unique about any one idea in "The Referral Engine." There's nothing unique about a 5lb. bag of sugar either. Of course that bag of sugar could be in the hands of a skilled pastry chef - or it could be in mine. I can tell you there's a pretty big difference. John Jantsch is the Head Chef of Marketing. He has an almost magical way of accumulating massive quantities of more basic ideas, sifting them, combining them in perfect proportions, and then turning them into recipes for delicious success. The end result almost defies identification of those original ingredients. A great chef understands every tool, and exactly what his oven will do at each temperature. John Jantsch understands small business owners to the extent he crawls right inside our heads to tweak attitudes - and he does it by slowly building a case logically, step by step, until you can't help but agree with what has just become so obvious.

In "Referral Engine" one of the first things he tackles is a business owner's reluctance to ask for referrals. I know that until I was exposed to Jantsch's material, I hated it! I expected my clients to love me and spread the love without me asking - and in fact, often times that did happen. No matter how good you think you are now, if you're like me, you have no idea how great your untapped potential in this area is.
I think the thing I like most about Referral Engine, and Jantsch's work in general, is that there is no dishonesty, no gimmicks, no use of trickery. I've always believed the path to success lies in creating a great product or service for which one charges a fair price. It's an approach built on creating a great product or service to begin with. Jantsch shares that approach. For example, Chapter 5 is titled "Your Authentic Strategy." The underlying premise of this work is the need to create a company worth referring. The second key idea is that you get ahead by helping others first. We're encouraged to partner with other businesses, and to always be looking for ways to help others, to connect, to refer. There are no one-way streets in Jantsch world. You clearly give as well as get. The icing on this cupcake is the multitude of examples and references that help one understand just what all of this means and how it's done.

Then, once the underlying foundation is in place, Jantsch starts with the mechanics, and, unlike other "idea" based authors - many of whom I also love - Jantsch gets into the guts of the issue. Here's how. Here's where you go. Do this next. There's no sugar coating. This stage isn't about the tasty result. This is about the process. Jantsch doesn't just cover the need to blog, he starts at the basement. For example, from P. 131, "Keyword rich" covers the way you need to use keywords in your blog in order to make it accessible. Sure, you might want to buy another book just on SEO, but in this one section, Jantsch manages to succinctly distill the basics that you will need - including providing tools like [...] which will help you.

If you take all of this book to heart, and implement it fully, not only will you have a great referral machine, you'll have a great business. This one book may not have all the information you'll need to improve all of the other parts of your business, but it will help you identify parts that aren't working because they will keep you from being talk, or referral, worthy. This book, assuming one has an Amazon Prime membership - and every small business owner should - is $11.69 today, its release date. I'd be surprised if your return on investment wasn't at least 1,000 times that. On the other hand, you could order 20 to 30 other books to cover the various aspects covered here - and I would hope for that, you'd have greater results, but somehow I seriously doubt it.

I love this book, and I think you will too.

A Boal Companion: Dialogues on Theatre and Cultural PoliticsFrom Routledge

This carefully constructed and thorough collection of theoretical engagements with Augusto Boal’s work is the first to look ’beyond Boal’ and critically assesses the Theatre of the Opressed (TO) movement in context.

A Boal Companion looks at the cultural practices which inform TO and explore them within a larger frame of cultural politics and performance theory. The contributors put TO into dialogue with complexity theory– Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas, race theory, feminist performance art, Deleuze and Guattari, and liberation psychology– to name just a few, and in doing so, the kinship between Boal’s project and multiple fields of social psychology, ethics, biology, comedy, trauma studies and political science is made visible.

The ideas generated throughout A Boal Companion will:

  • expand readers' understanding of TO as a complex, interdisciplinary, multivocal body of philosophical discourses
  • provide a variety of lenses through which to practice and critique TO
  • make explicit the relationship between TO and other bodies of work.

This collection is ideal for TO practitioners and scholars who want to expand their knowledge, but it also provides unfamiliar readers and new students to the discipline with an excellent study resource.

X-Ray Compton Scattering (Oxford Series on Synchrotron Radiation), by Malcolm Cooper, Peter Mijnarends, Nobuhiro Shiotani, Nobuhiko Sakai,

With the development of potent x-ray sources at many synchrotron laboratories worldwide, Compton scattering has become a standard tool for studying electron densities in materials. This book provides condensed matter and materials physicists with an authoritative, up-to-date, and very accessible account of the Compton scattering method, leading to a fundamental understanding of the electrical and magnetic properties of solid materials. The spectrum of Compton
scattered x-rays is particularly sensitive to this behaviour and thus can be used as a direct probe and to test the predictions of theory. The current generation of synchrotron facilities allows this method to be readily exploited to study the ground state electron density in both elements and in complex
compounds. It is important that those working in related fields, as well as the increasing number directly using the Compton method, have a comprehensive assessment of what is now possible and how to achieve it, in addition to a full understanding of its theoretical basis. This monograph is unique and timely, since little of what is described, was practicable a decade ago. The development of synchrotron radiation facilities has ensured that the technique described here will remain a powerful
probe of electron charge and spin density for many years to come.

About the Author

M. J. Cooper (Chapters 1 and 11)
Department of Physics, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK
Malcolm Cooper is one of the pioneers of Compton scattering studies of electron momentum density, with many research relevant publications and reviews over four decades. His Warwick research group has been particularly involved in the development of synchrotron-based Compton scattering studies of ferromagnetism, at synchrotron rings in Europe and Japan. Currently he is Head of the Department of Physics at Warwick University.
P.E. Mijnarends (Chapter 8)
Physics Department, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts 02115 and Interfaculty Reactor Institute, Delft University of Technology, 2629 JB Delft, The Netherlands.
Peter Mijnarends has spent most of his research career as an established international leader of positron annihilation studies of solids. He is now a guest scientist at Northeastern University and the Interfaculty Reactor Institute of Delft University of Technology.
N. Shiotani (Chapter 3, 9 and 11)
Institute of Materials Structure Science, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization
Tsukuba 305-0801, Japan.
Nobuhiro Shiotani's research has embraced first positron annihilation and latterly Compton scattering methods of studying Fermiology and electron momentum density in a wide range of solids.
N. Sakai (Chapter 10)
Graduate School and Faculty of Science, Himeji Institute of Technology, Koto, Akou-gun, Hyogo 678-1297, Japan.
Nobuhiko Sakai was involved in the very first Compton scattering studies of spin density using cooled beta-emitting polarized sources. Following this breakthrough he has developed synchrotron-based magnetic Compton scattering studies in Japan. His group has been concentrated in finding the change of magnetic electron spin and orbital states in conjunction with crystal structure and phase transitions.
A. Bansil (Chapter 8)
Professor of Physics, Department of Physics, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts 02115, USA.
Arun Bansil leads a group that has led the development and implementation of methodology for carrying out first-principles calculations of spectral intensities relevant to angle-resolved photoemission, positron-annihilation angular correlation spectra and Compton profiles in complex systems, such as the high-Tc's, within the framework of the local density approximation.

Came in good quality as advertised.
By Sidiq "The Biblical Bibliophile"
This book, written by the experts of the field is not so much a textbook as it is a collection of review papers. Being so, it will assist in exposing the graduate student to the many facets of the method. Perhaps Schuelke's Electron Dynamics by Inelastic X-Ray Scattering would delve more into the theory.
