Essential Foundations of Christian Faith..

Having had the privilege of some editing of another manuscript at the author's ministry headquarters in the English countryside, I looked forward with anticipation to reading a new compilation of Mr Prince's previously unpublished work. It doesn't disappoint.

From his opening statement of purpose, readers are in for a bit of sod turning. "The ultimate purpose of this book is for you to discover what does and does not matter in your Christian walk...a matter of critical importance...confusion on this issue is the root of most of our problems." What are the issues of religious law vs grace that need recognition in our own lives? In the Church? Have we relegated ourselves to lives of rules and regulations? Lives of striving? Analysis is followed with anti-dote. God's gift of grace.

Mr Prince leads us into a comprehensive and life-changing understanding of grace beginning with Romans 10.4, "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." With this fresh perspective we begin to live the life of liberty and freedom that God's gift of grace provides. Mr Prince goes on to develop this in its entirety for full benefit and release from living a life of religious constraints and performance orientation.

What I love about Derek Prince's writing is his ability to distill his thorough knowledge of difficult topics into accessible language that ensures our understanding and ability to apply the principles learned. The application of those truths is up to us.

When biblical grace is taught correctly, it is the most freeing, refreshing topic there is to listen to. Especially for those who have been weighed down by religious legalism and bondage.

If you think the message of grace is a "free for all" teaching that encourages sin (which is what *I* was led to believe), I urge you to read this book.

I was quick to discover that grace (in the circles I was in), has been distorted, misrepresented and slandered. This book teaches the differences between grace and law, what God requires of us, what we are to obey and more. It also exposes the root of "self-dependence" that comes when you sit under legalism and law.

When taught correctly, grace does not encourage or condone sin, but helps you resist it. Grace causes you to fall in love with your Savior that much more, once you understand it.

You are set free from working and trying to be good enough. You no longer live with a performance acceptance mentality.

I highly recommend this book, especially for those who are burned out, weary and overloaded in their walk with God.

Excellent!

This book isn't what you think, though it may likely be what you need. You would imagine that a witch hunt for who should be labeled a legalist would be what you would find, but that is not the case at all. No, what you have is what grace really is and what it could never be.

The tone is respectful throughout, but the issue is faced head on. He doesn't try to ditch the Law of God, but use it as the Lord intends. Here is the irrefutable fact: Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness. Christ, of course, fulfills the Law, but He ends it as a source of righteousness for you and me.

Most Christians I know grasp that as it pertains to salvation. The problem is that we think the opposite when we try to live the Christian life. We try to earn God's favor, we think we must be worthy of His love. The problem is that we are as in need of grace as before. As Mr. Prince so ably points out it can't be both. You may get to the Lord through grace or the Law-it is one or the other, now and always!

Here is his definition of legalism: "the attempt to achieve righteousness with God by keeping a set of rules." Well, that definition alone makes it folly. I once believed that legalism was a concept that only applied to salvation, but I was wrong. Like the foolish Galatians, I can go back as a believer and live as an ardent legalist!

The purpose of the Law is not for the purpose we use it. A teacher, yes; a deliverer, never. In fact, the Law only brings condemnation. Liberty comes from Christ.

He shows how when a Holiness lady, who may love the Lord, doesn't wear makeup and holds that up as her approval with the Lord, she makes this error. (He kindly never mentions we Independent Baptists who have a few of these ourselves). He does show how this is exactly the same as the orthodox Jew who won't eat ham.

What really makes this book so valuable is how Mr. Prince teaches in the latter chapters how to receive God's grace in your life and how to apply it.

If you have been hearing all the debate about legalism and you are at a loss for how to process the debate, I highly recommend this book. If you just want to straighten out your own thinking, then I recommend it even more.

IN THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS THE MICROWAVE

You may be wondering why we didn't just make a vegan cookbook that requires a, you know, stove. Well, we know you're busy. After spending hours on end cramming Shakespeare into your head, we're positive that the last thing you want to do is stand in front of a hot stove stirring sauce or waiting for a pot of water to boil. And c'mon-a microwave is so much more accessible than a stove. Microwave in the student union or your dorm room? Check. Stovetop? Not so much.

Microwaved vegan food. Yum! Okay, we're not totally naive here-we know this probably conjures up an image of a bowl of nuked, wilted kale or some other oh-so-healthy (but possibly gag-inducing) green food. However, at PETA we're all about breaking stereotypes, so we've created a cookbook dedicated to vegan food that doesn't require a stove and tastes delicious.

College is supposed to be the time in your life when you're really figuring out how to fend for yourself. You're already trying to figure out physics and how to get out of going to your 8:00 a.m. class, so who has time to learn how to flambé or frappé? Did you know you can actually make pasta without a pot or pancakes without a pan? Well, believe it, buddy. We can teach you all you need to know to make simple, effortless meals. You'll have plenty of time later on in life to make friends with your stove.

We're betting you've been there-nuking package after package of ramen. Opening the freezer with your fingers crossed, hoping there's a frozen burrito lurking behind the ice tray. Or gagging down some pizza, trying your hardest not to dwell on the fact that mold makes interesting shapes in a week-anything to put off actually spending time and effort cooking a meal.

That's where we come in.

Why didn't we make a cookbook that's just like every other one out there? Because we love being the black sheep, the lone wolf, the creep in the back corner. Okay, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. We dare to be different, and we bet you are itchin' to do the same.

HEADS UP

So we know you are old enough and smart enough to know how to work a microwave safely, but we still worry! Please humor us and keep the following in mind when using a microwave:

•Take extreme caution when removing containers of hot food and boiling water from the microwave to avoid spills and burns. Burns don't feel so hot. (Get it?)

•Although most plastic containers are microwave safe, please double-check before putting one in the microwave. When in doubt, use a container that is clearly marked "Microwave Safe" or "Microwavable."

•Of course, no metal objects in the microwave! You know you don't want to be that guy-the person in your dorm or apartment who catches the only working microwave on fire.

Also, FYI, all of these recipes were tested in seven-hundred-watt microwaves and heated on the HIGH setting unless otherwise mentioned in the recipe. Cooking times may vary depending on altitude and microwave.

I am a huge peta supporter and i love vegan recipes (and am in college.) but this is just a book about how to microwave things with pre made products. i cook from scratch and like to eat healthy so this book wasn't for me.

A great cookbook for the minimalist cook

Finally, what I was looking for. An easy and realistic vegan cookbook. This is useful for anyone who doesn't want to spend much time on food preparation. Everything can be done in the microwave, but, honestly, you can add steps to suit individual taste. I have a big collection of vegan cookbooks, but they mostly are not used because I don't want to spend a few hours a day buying ingredients, chopping, cooking and cleaning. I do it for guests and if I'm in the mood, but never for every day. This cookbook adds options for us minimalists who want to eat well but keep it simple.

The book itself is of good quality, but I did not like the recipes

The book itself is of good quality, but I did not like the recipes. Most of them are unappetizing and unhealthy, which I now realize that it was not advertising healthy recipes. I liked the idea of this book, but as a college student, I do not eat microwaved food every day and want to enjoy a healthy vegan lifestyle. I am a new vegan and this book did not help me with my transition, but it might help students who live in dorms with only a microwave for cooking.

Many believe that this shift began with the "tough on crime" policies advocated by Republicans and southern Democrats beginning in the late 1960s, which sought longer prison sentences, more frequent use of the death penalty, and the explicit or implicit targeting of politically marginalized people. In The First Civil Right, Naomi Murakawa inverts the conventional wisdom by arguing that the expansion of the federal carceral state-a system that disproportionately imprisons blacks and Latinos-was, in fact, rooted in the civil-rights liberalism of the 1940s and early 1960s, not in the period after.

Murakawa traces the development of the modern American prison system through several presidencies, both Republican and Democrat. Responding to calls to end the lawlessness and violence against blacks at the state and local levels, the Truman administration expanded the scope of what was previously a weak federal system. Later administrations from Johnson to Clinton expanded the federal presence even more. Ironically, these steps laid the groundwork for the creation of the vast penal archipelago that now exists in the United States. What began as a liberal initiative to curb the mob violence and police brutality that had deprived racial minorities of their 'first civil right-physical safety-eventually evolved into the federal correctional system that now deprives them, in unjustly large numbers, of another important right: freedom. A Must Read Given Current Events

A clear, compelling and deeply researched work, Murakawa complicates the widely-believed understanding that the expansion of the carceral state was the result of conservative appeals to law and order when in fact it was a bipartisan endeavor whose foundations were laid by liberals. She shows, quite convincingly, how American fears of black people were leveraged by politicians to expand a prison industrial complex that exists, increasingly, simply for its own sake. I look forward to reading the scholarship it hopefully inspires.

Anyone interested in mass incarceration needs to read this book. Before this book was published, I heard Prof. Murakawa give a talk based on it and that talk is still one of the most electrifying talks I have ever heard. Her argument in the book is one that we seem to have to keep on learning: that well-intentioned liberals are a part of the problem. This book is a warning that our current focus on improving criminal justice administration through liberal reform is misguided and only bound to make criminal justice seemingly legitimate but still racially deadly.The chapter on Truman, chapter 2, remakes our understanding of law and order politics and places responsibility squarely on the shoulders of liberals and the national democratic party by revealing the failure of liberal form.

About the Author
Laura M. Justice, Ph.D., is a clinical speech-language pathologist and applied researcher in early childhood language and literacy development, communication disorders, and educational interventions. Dr. Justice is Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University, is Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and is Founding Editor of Evidence-Based Practice Briefi. Dr. Justice's research activities have received grant support from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, the International Reading Association, the National Institutes ofHealth, and the U. S. Department of Education's Institute ofEducation Sciences. She has received such awards and honors for her work as the Editor's Award for the American Journal of5peech-Language Pathology, the Early Career Publication Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Research, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering from President G. W. Bush, and a Fulbright Scholar Award. Justice has published nearly 100 articles, chapters, and reports on early education and language lliteracy intervention and has authored or edited seven books.
Helen K. Ezell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in the study of child language development and disorders. In addition to her research in child language, she has an interest in the preparation of teacher-scholars in speechlanguage
pathology. Dr. Ezell is affiliated as adjunct faculty with the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches in the areas of communication science and disorders.

I particularly liked the use of examples that were given

I had to purchase this book for a college course I was taking. Honestly, I don't even remember learning all of the syntax in this book when I was younger. There's a wealth of information here and each chapter has questions to test your understanding at the end. I particularly liked the use of examples that were given; they made the information much more easy to process and remember.

Anyone who needs to be reminded that Watergate was more than a "third-rate burglary" should read Emery's retelling of the scandal that drove Nixon from office. Drawing on the memoirs of many of the Watergate figures as well as an examination of the most recently released Nixon tapes, Emery, former Washington bureau chief of the London Times , relates an engrossing story of how the Watergate break-in came to pass, and how the coverup spread like wildfire throughout Nixon's re-election committee and the White House. Describing one criminal act after another, beginning with the break-in of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office, Emery makes it clear that, in the words of special prosecutor Leon Jaworski, the Oval Office had been transformed by Nixon "into a mean den where perjury and low schemes became a way of life." Given the illegal activities Nixon condoned and/or conducted, as related by Emery, most readers will find it hard to feel much sympathy for him even as the author relates the agony of the late president and his family during his final days in the White House as resignation became inevitable. As the 20th anniversary of Richard Nixon's fall and tarnishing of the presidential image approaches, Emery provides an intricate, meticulously researched narrative that draws heavily on interviews with the principals to explain how and why the Watergate break-in occurred. A former Washington correspondent of The Times of London who is now with the BBC, Emery is also the author of a five-part TV series on Watergate to be aired this August on the Discovery Channel. In addition to an introductory section on the cast of characters involved, Emery provides a detailed examination of the Committee To Re-elect the President (CRP) and its dirty tricks: wiretapping, money laundering campaigns, and the infamous burglary of Democratic National Committee headquarters. Unlike much of the psychopersonal material that has come out on Nixon, Emery's book focuses on the tough political problems, documenting the need for impeachment and ultimately endorsing it. Riveting reading that is based on an unprecedented combing of the primary sources, this work will be especially helpful to the generations for whom Watergate is a nebulous historical event and will provide an excellent corrective to the whitewashing that ocurred on Nixon's recent death. The infamous tapes that sank Nixon are only 60 hours' worth of deleted expletives and cover-up conspiring; with more than 5,000 hours still secret, the cascade of books about his presidency will not soon run dry. However, given Emery's spare, meticulously fair, and thoroughly engrossing account, it will be a long time before the bugging scandal is better told. Far from dance-on-the-grave vindictiveness (though Nixon looks worse than ever), the ex-president at least receives from Emery, a British journalist, a worldly appreciation of his dilemmas in trying to escape the tightening political and criminal net. Each fateful event in the saga--the setup of Gordon Liddy's spy unit, his men's arrest at the Democratic Party offices, the panicky destruction of documents that began the cover-up, Judge "Maximum John" Sirica's draconian sentences of the burglars, and thence the accelerating slide toward impeachment, with each revelation more astonishing than the last--has since become part of the national folklore. Emery takes us back with forensic caution and a signal lack of hyperbole and proves once more that facts are stranger than fiction. The other Watergate books, by principals or scalp-waving journalists, repose in libraries; count this as a fascinating, objective synthesis of them that also plumbs news archives (such as that of the late H. Great Book

This is a great book that became the basis for the Discovery Channel's 5-part documentary on Watergate. It is an extensive examination of the entire Watergate episode based on interviews with the relevant participants (excluding Nixon and Mitchell). In fact, Emery was one of the last people to interview Bob Haldeman before he died in 1993. If you don't believe what Emery writes or what Nixon's men said, I'd suggest viewing the Discovery Channel's documentary and you can see Haldeman, Erlichman, Colson, Magruder, LaRue, Dean, Liddy, etc... admit to what was going on in and around the White House.

If you're looking for a very readable and historically accurate account of Watergate, this is an excellent choice. No preposterous theories are advanced here, such as those in presented in Silent Coup. Instead, this book is based on interviews with the participants, the actual Watergate tapes, and tedious documentation of White House memos from the Nixon years. Emery also points out and attempts to resolve the many contradictions that exist among the published accounts of many of the Watergate players. While those that know all the secrets of Watergate are becoming fewer and fewer each year, this account is fairly difficult to dispute.

Finally, ignore the review written by True_Blue. Every one of his/her points are addressed in the first 100 pages of Emery's book. Based on the criticisms in that review, it is obvious that he/she never read this book.

Great up to date account of the worst US scandal

If you want an up-to-date account of the worst abuse of political power in the history of the United States, you have found your book - go ahead and place your order. As far as the "Silent Coup" book is sometimes referred to is sold at Klu Klux Klan rallies and appeals the extremists on the right. They would have you believe that Nixon, Liddy, Halderman, etc. were not the real criminals but that John Dean was(! ). John Dean has successfully sued the authors of the discredited (and, not surprisingly, out-of-print) "Silent Coup."

The best start-to-finish acount of Watergate.

As a Watergate junkie, I long had been frustrated that no one had written a comprehensive, chronological exposition of the scandal. I have read many of the personal accounts, and Woodstein, but, until this book, there was no single, all-encompassing narrative of Watergate. Emery's book is excellent, although it gets bogged down at times in the welter of minutiae that his exhaustive research, and the tapes, and all of the other books, provide. What this book exposes most starkly is the incredible arrogance and disdain for the law that President Nixon and his cohorts, including the Attorney General, exhibited with barely any second thoughts. The book also succeeds in telling the story of one of the greatest triumphs of American constitutional history -- the peaceful removal of a corrupt President and the orderly transfer of power. To my mind, the Watergate saga is a highlight of American democracy, and Emery's book reveals that.
