Perfect Guide from Pre-Purchase Consideration to Post-Purchase Evaluation

As mentioned before, the author is very resourceful and quick to respond to questions. After browsing through the chapters and reviewing some of the additional teacher resources (designed for classroom use), I found the book to very highly consistent with professional standards of successful implementation. She walks through and explains how to properly conduct many of the essential, yet often overlooked stages of process planning, vendor selection, and post-implementation evaluation. For being just under 200 pages, this is about as comprehensive as you'll find.

Modern ERP is a great book for ERP newcomers looking to understand the implications of ERP as well as professional / experienced ERP salespeople, consultants, or system administrators looking to refine their skills and knowledge base.

About the Author
T. J. Chung is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. His research interests include numerical simulation of quantum gravity, plasma dynamics in fusion reactors, hypersonic turbulent flows, computational fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics, numerical modeling of combustion and propulsion, fluid dynamics, and heat and mass transfer. He has also authored seven other books, including General Continuum Mechanics and Applied Continuum Mechanics, both published by Cambridge University Press.

Great Breadth, but...

This book covers just about every aspect Computational Fluid Dynamics. The fact that a single author could master such a range of topics and articulate them clearly is truly remarkable. Yet, I can't recommend this book. I bought it with high hopes in 2004, eager to broaden my knowledge beyond the finite volume method and SIMPLE algorithm. Well, it's been over three years and the book has mostly sat on the shelf. Every time I pull it down to learn some tidbit, I come away empty handed. The writing is high level and abstract, and it's difficult to extract useful nuggets from it. The first line of the preface says, "This book is intended for the beginner as well as for the practitioner in CFD." As a long time practitioner, I can't see it as useful for either. A typical section consists of a brief intro, then a bunch of equations, followed by some results extracted from a journal paper. Then it's on to the next section. Consider Chapter 3 on the Finite Difference Method. The first 5 pages are an onslaught of 45 equations and almost no descriptive text. How does one get a sense of the method from this? I would strongly recommend reading a section or two before buying this book.

A comprehensive book that fails to deliver the essential details.

The first time I saw this book I thought it would be one of the best CFD books , but after reading it I was disappointing.
There are so many equations in this book, but the author fails to explain the details and concepts.
The book could have been much better. The chapters are very comprehensive ( covers FDM , FEM and some FVM ) , which is one of the few advantages of the book.

GREAT INTRODUCTION TO NUMERICAL PDEs IN CFD

I like this book a great deal, but do note that I'm reviewing it as a treatment of numerical approaches to partial differential equations in computational fluid dynamics and not as a text for CFD as a whole.

My background is applied mathematics via finance and economics. I'm interested in solving parabolic and elliptic PDEs by finite differences, and eventually by finite elements and spectral techniques, as a means of pricing various financial derivatives.

Chung's book is a remarkably thorough treatment of the available techniques in these areas with substantial pointers to the primary literature. Explanations tend to be rather terse but nonetheless complete. More explanation, and possibly a few more examples, might be helpful, but that's a question of authorial style. Indeed, at some points I'm happy for a spare treatment that highlights the logical structure of the problem at hand in a subject laden with multiple layers of literature and detail.

To calibrate, I find Chung's book more accessible than Roache (CFD), Richtmyer and Morton, Thomas, and Elman et al; about the same level as LeVeque (Finite Difference Methods) and Ames (Numerical Methods); and harder than Smith, Morton and Mayers, Trefethen (Spectral Methods), Pozrikidis (Finite and Spectral Element Methods), and the treatment of PDEs in Press et al. It's also easier to use than more specialized works like Strikwerda, Karniadakis and Sherwin, and any of Hackbusch's books. (Full citations are in Listmania; see my Amazon profile.)

If you're willing to work with pencil in-hand, as with almost all science books, and to hit the stacks occasionally for back-up material, Chung's book is a great entry point to numerical PDEs.

Nothing short of a masterpiece . . .

Deep inside each of us lives a darkness. A darkness that not even those closest to us can understand, and often, are unaware that it even exists. In Russell's debut, he does what he does best - thrusts his readers into the stream of consciousness of not just any character's mind, but a mind all of us can relate to. An everyday kind of mind.

SEA OF TREES follows Bill, an American college student, who accompanies his girlfriend, Junko, on a journey to come to peace with the disappearance of her dear sister. They traverse Japan's Aokigahara Forest. A forest whose history is also filled with much darkness. With each step they take, Bill finds they are not only further inside this strangely beautiful and tragic forest, but that he is further and further away from answers about... everything. Confusion and fear and stress builds between Bill and his beloved girlfriend, and he struggles to understand not only the truth behind this trip, but also what plagues his Junko. What her inner thoughts are. Because he sees that with each passing moment, Junko seemingly becomes more and more detached from him. And from life.

Hold on tight, readers, because the road to answers and the truth is a bumpy one. Russell's writing is raw, real, and stunningly palpable. This book covers everything you need to know about building large scale model railroad benchwork. If you're looking for information on building a basic 4' X 8' bench, there are about 3 pages of information that cover this. If you never plan to get much bigger than 4' X 8', this rest if the information in this book is interesting, however, you may be better served, initially, by a different book.

Dont be put off if like myself, your from the UK and this is an American book about railroad benchwork. All applys no matter where or what you model. It has all you ever wanted to know about building a very good base for a model railway. Ive seen some books on the subject over the years but this is the best ive seen and has proven to be a very valuable tool in my 'new build'. It will show a few tricks to even the more experianced builders. Good step by step instructions and many pictures and diagrams.

Get it, you'l wonder how you got by without it.

A Milestone in Scientific History

James Van Allen passed away in August 2006, leaving an awesome legacy of achivement. This slender, well-written volume describes the progress in atmospheric and space physics with a focus on Van Allen's crowning achivement: his detection of the high-energy radiation belts around the Earth. The Van Allen belts were found by particle detectors prepared by Van Allen and his associates at the University of Iowa and carried aloft on the early Explorer satellites of 1958.

Van Allen continued his work in physics and space science up until his death at age 91. He assisted greatly in the researching of the book I co-authored, The First Space Race, which told the story of the earliest satellites. Origins of Magentospheric Physics tells an accessible, compelling story of scientific discovery.

This 80 page book tells the harrowing story of Bou Meng, a survivor from Toul Sleng, Khmer Rouge Prison S-21 in Cambodia. "It offers a glimpse through a keyhole into the dark interior of the Khmer Rouge, who were responsible for the deaths of as many as one-fourth of Cambodia's population from 1975-1979. Bou Meng was save, after weeks of torture, because he was an artist. He was taken from a row of shackled prisoners and put to work painting portraits of the Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot, and he continued, as other were tortured and killed, until the prison was hastily evacuated in the face of the Vietnamese invasion. Tuol Sleng has been converted into a Museum of Genocide, and its lower floors are filled with hundreds of portraits of victims, taken at the moment they arrived. Bou Meng visits from time to time and when he does he is surrounded by the images of ghosts. As he talks, standing in front of a panel of portraits, his face becomes one of them, stunned and questioning. 'They all died', he said. 'Among them only I am alive.' His survival, when almost every one of the prisoners died, seems still to be too much to comprehend. Bou Meng's story offers a rare and valuable glimpse into a world of savagery and into the life of a seemingly ordinary man who survived an extraordinary fate."

A Touching and Informative Book of the Atrocities of Khmer Rouge

I purchased this book while visiting S-21 prison in Phnom Penh . Bou Meng was at the prison where he had been tortured years earlier, and selling his book. He seemed like a gentle and peaceful soul. I read his book the following day and it is a sad and touching account of the atrocities of Pol Pot. A very informative account of crimes against humanity.

I met Bou Meng at S21

I admit I have not read this book yet; but I will begin tonight. I had to finish reading [...] first. Bou Meng was outside S21 selling the book and I passed while leaving after having toured and photographed the entire complex. To witness the horrific and senseless suffering of these gentle and smiling people, then meet this man and have him sign my book, was incredibly humbling. I felt great honor as they motioned me around the table to pose for a photograph with Bou Meng. And he smiles... You can see it in my eyes - I was blown away in more ways than one. I will add another review or edit this one after reading, I think I will finish it in a week or two at my slow pace.

I too met Bou Meng, but with a group of Overseas Adventure Travel tourists. Purchasing the book, I read it and find it seems like an honest telling of the story of one man who went to the edge of death the Khmer Rouge created.
