Great book to learn and revise your English pronunciation!

This is a great book. Very easy to understand for people without previous knowledge of phonetics. For me, that studied English as a Second Language, made me remember my classes; it also made me realize that I still have things to learn.
It is written in a very witty, refreshing way; not at all like a rigid university textbook. This feature makes it appealing for younger people, in my opinion.

this book is very good my English pronunciation has changed less in two weeks after i received the book with the cd, i listen to the cd everyday when i am talking with my friends at work i talked with confidence now, if you want to speak better English this is the best book for you.

Maria Antonieta Poblete was the daughter of a “Hacendado”, the owner of a sugar plantation in the Tenancingo Valley of Mexico. In the 18th Century and earlier all fertile land in the valleys of the Federal District was owned by hereditary families, which had received it from the Crown of Spain after the Conquest. In the first decade of the 20th Century Maria Antonieta was in school in Toluca, the city just north of her home in Malinalco. As the privileged daughter of a “Hacendado” she would have continued her fine education in the Catholic Girl’s School had the Mexican Revolution and tenacious, Mormon missionaries not intervened and changed what should have been her life.

The revolution began for land reform, as the Mexican government had confiscated land from the people and given it to the plantation owners to plant more sugar cane. Land is also why the Mormons were in Mexico. They had purchased land from the government in order to practice polygamy, which was against the law in the United States. Mormon missionaries were sent by the church hierarchy in Salt Lake City to convert Mexican citizens and exhort them to come to the states of Chihuahua and Sonora where the Mormon Church had established colonies.

Maria’s story is taken from journals that she kept most of her life and from the memories of her childhood. The story follows the history of the three world events that appear in conjunction during the first decades of the 20th Century. There seems to be a connecting thread that follows Maria Antionieta throughout her life and it is posited that this may be the connecting principle of the Universe. This story of Maria’s shows the connection of World War I, the Mexican Revolution and the Mormon’s in Mexico.

An outstanding memoir....a must read for anyone looking for the intersection of love, war and revolution. Wonderfully told tale of lost love, the Mexican revolution and WWI and WWII. This is Nicholas Sparks one better....Great read!

Another worthless book

Another worthless book. There is nothing in this book that anyone with a bit of common sense shouldn't already know. In her book Creating a Personal Protocol, this author gave us a collection of blank, lined pages masquerading as a book and this is just more of the same. If you enjoy spending almost $20 for a blank tablet then go for it. Otherwise don't waste your time or money. This author is doing a huge disservice to the BDSM community by not providing any meaningful instruction while charging an excessive price. A total rip-off.

I was so disappointed in 'creating a personal protocol' that I bought this one, noticing too late its by the same author. Another disappointment: checklists you will find on any website, half the book is filled with a yearly calendar (no really) and nothing usefull.

Badly formatted, useless and a utter waste of money.

The "activities" presented in this book are nothing more than what any reasonably sane person does naturally in their daily life. Mr. Reilly is really scraping the bottom of the barrel to suggest personal budgeting as an activity in a book apparently aimed at a fetish demographic. The same goes for the authors views on time management (over a third of this kindle book is given over to an unreadable and inscrutable "year planner" that you are invited to fill out - on a kindle). Ditto for the section on how to provide references (thanks- I have successfully applied for a job/lease/bank loan etc. before, Shannon!) and also the section on notating your likes, dislikes and boundaries. The formatting on this ebook is particularly atrocious.

Nothing but absolutle drivel, presented in such a manner that I was starkly reminded of being back at primary school.

I don't know where the editorial review came from, but whoever wrote it should be punished by being made to actually read the book.

A GREAT tool to start you on your way to better speech!

Although I have my criticisms about the book, it's a solid 5 in my experience.

The book was required reading for my Diction course in college, so I came to know the book under a dubious first impression. The quirky nature of my course lent a bit of frustration towards the book that was unwarranted.

Once we started to dive into the contents of the book, did I begin to understand why my professor chose this text.

PROS:
- Everything is laid out simply.
- Easy to understand and use.
- Effectively categorized phonetically.
- Exercises that are explained and thorough for recovering from various speech issues
- Existentialism ← Sorry, couldn't help myself, needed to add another E word for giggles.
- Spells out dialectical issues concerning region and linguistic.

CONS
- There appear to be some phonetic sounds that aren't included, notably the Ʋ sound (something of a combination of W and V), which I needed for a research project.
- Despite being easy to understand and use, there were times when I felt lost trying to find certain phonetic areas, but that could just be the way the author decided to organize, which may just be in contrast to my own desires.
- Could use some updated (and cleaner appearing) graphical representations of the anatomy presented therein.

Ever since I took this class, and was required to read this book, I've been trying to convince other people how valuable the entire experience has been. As a native English speaker with minor speech issues, I found the entire text to be a great way to improve my speech, and I can only imagine how this might help something with larger issues.

I rented the book for class, but I intend to buy it for my own personal use.

Really great textbook, definitely worth the cost. Rented this for a great prize via Amazon! I love all of the exercises the book offers to improve voice. It's a required text for one of my classes and definitely very relative to my class. (Voice & Diction)

About the Author
Joan Ifland was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. in economics and political science from Oberlin College, Ohio. After a stint on the fiscal staff of the Wisconsin Legislature, she earned an M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business. She worked in corporate finance for five years for a Fortune 100 company. After forty-three years of declining physical and emotional health, Joan began eliminating refined carbohydrates from her diet. The miraculous recovery from numerous illnesses for her and her family prompted her to share her experience and knowledge of how to manage a life free from refined carbohydrates. Today, Joan is devoted to spreading the word about recovery from carbohydrate sensitivity. She lectures, coaches, and holds seminars. She lives in Houston, Texas. She has been married since 1978 to her husband, an investment banker. Their two daughters were born in 1983 and 1984.

Not an organized book.

I found this book to be very repetitive, and not organized at all. Author has a scattered stream of thought, which is probably why she repeats personal stories. It is written more as a memoir type book. Author also stated she isn't a trained nutritionist or dietician and that she pulled together writing this book by research of others. This book is heavily influenced by her personal experience and success with Food Addicts Anonymous. FAA is a 12 step program and their nutrition plan completely avoids any & all forms of sugar & flour. I found probably 15 pages of the entire book useful. The rest, it would be easier just to get the food guide directly from an FAA meeting or get "Food Addiction: the Body Knows" written by Kay Sheppard.

I have been trying to figure out how I can bring my children on board with my current plan of eating. This book provides useful tools and guidance with doing just that! Love the recipe options that are included for complete breakfast muffins to break up my usual oatmeal and cottage cheese.

Caius Julius Caesar, now Dictator of Rome, has decided to revise the Roman calendar, which has become out of sync with the seasons. Who is murdering Caesar's astronomers?

It is 45 BC and an increasingly regal Caesar is busily reorganizing Rome, including summoning a conclave of astronomers to reform the Roman calendar. When one of these astronomers is mysteriously murdered, Caesar assigns our hero, Decius Caecilius Metellus, to investigate. As always, Decius is a wide ranging and thorough investigator, traveling throughout Rome, interviewing everyone from Cleopatra to racing touts, turning up many overlapping mysteries and minor crimes until he succeeds in resolving the main mystery.

As usual in the series, Decius sets a light tone, bantering casually through Rome's highest social circles. However, behind the light mood, there are many darker notes. For example, it slowly becomes clear that Decius is now the last survivor of his formerly powerful family and he needs to move with more care than before. Decius gently touches on the various ambitious politicians orbiting around Caesar amidst hints of emerging conspiracies.

The murder mystery is adequate but the real fun comes from touring Rome with Decius, seeing its sights and studying its ways. A good four stars.

Quick historical note: Although Decius is fictional, the Caecilii Metelli were real. In their day they were one of the greatest of the plebian families, with at least ten "Quintus Caecilius Metellus"es becoming consul, but they vanished from history after siding against Caesar in the Civil War. Our fictional Decius may owe his survival to his happy marriage to Julia, a (fictional) niece of Caesar.

Another Welcome Book in the SPQR Series

I enjoy this series as much as any I've found. I like the mysteries themselves and the characters are interesting and well drawn - no cartoon-ish shortcuts. There is an underlying wry sense of humor that I find irresistible as well. As to the history, I have checked and double checked and Roberts knows his stuff. To the extent we have documentation, he's spot on. Where there's room for interpretation, he goes for it. His view of Caesar - the main character is married to Caesar's niece and has been part of the Senatorial class with Caesar all along the way - is pretty great. And I'd bet pretty darned accurate, if truth be told. I recommend this entire series to any mystery lover. If you like historical mysteries, you'll be delighted. and if you have a sense of humor, they are even better. I've found the SPQR series an interesting contrast with Steven Saylor's more serious books set in the same era. Frequently they have taken an opposite view of an historical character - but, while I enjoy the Saylor books - I more than enjoy SPQR. I buy them new, in hard cover when they come out and I can't give higher praise than that to any writer. Try them, you'll like them. I own them all and can't wait for more to come.

Wait for the paperback...

Like its main character, the SPQR series is starting to show its age. Decius Metellus has lost a step or two and so too has the author. Other reviewers have noted the lack of a tie-in to major events--it's a serious detriment that makes this mystery far less engaging than most of the series. I would go so far as to say the ending was flat and disappointing.

It isn't bad, it just seems to have less of what Roberts usually provides: wit, pace and interesting twists. By all means give it a try, but wait for the paperback, or check it out of the library.

Be careful what you ask for

I got this book because I heard the author and her husband interviewed recently on NPR. Based on that, I thought "Wondering Who You Are" would be a uniquely uplifting story. I expected something along the lines of Jill Bolte Taylor's "My Stroke of Insight," which was a fascinating and inspiring first-hand account of a young woman's stroke and rehabilitation. For sure, this book did keep me on the edge of my seat - I couldn't put it down (as other reviewers have noted). And it did have some engaging parts, like the description of Richard's chaotic hospitalization, the couple's experience with a mediator over the legal settlement, and Lea's sexual exploration, among others. But I came away from the book feeling it was over-wrought and just plain sad. Here is a woman (the author) who actually leads a rich, surprising, adventure-filled life, but she just can't stop weeping over her lack of self-fulfillment. It's ironic that she spends so much of the book bemoaning the loss of her remarkable husband's pre-surgery personality, and yet while she had him that way, she was an alcoholic who preferred to be out partying rather than staying home with him and her children! Clearly she is transformed by her experience with him after he loses his personality, but she seems to find barely an ounce of delight in any of his rehabilitation successes or her own exploration of the wondrous possibilities life has to offer. Instead we hear too many times about her tears.

If nothing else, what this book teaches is - be careful what you ask for. If you long for unconditional love and acceptance, here is post-surgery Richard, able to offer these things in spades…. but it's creepy. Gurus like Byron Katie teach us the joy of living in the moment and questioning our personal narratives, but those approaches to self-transformation are only viable if we have a memory and a life story - as Richard does not.

Disappointed

This book was intense and held my interest until the writer decided to find a lover. Her self-centered ness and lack of empathy for her husband 's condition ( not affected by his tears as she leaves him to go take a vacation with her lover) made me wonder how she would have reacted if during her years of alcoholism , her husband would have sought a lover, (since she was not available to him emotionally. )

Medical thriller meets heartbreaking love story for a great read

Sonya Lea is a fabulous writer with an honest and subversive message, and Wondering Who I Am is a great read. Lea’s command of the medical specialists, medical centers, tests, drugs etc of traumatic brain injury, some of which are further elaborated on in the Notes section, makes this also an invaluable resource for anyone facing memory loss in themselves or a loved one.
Wondering Who I Am is equal parts love story and medical nightmare. The two narratives are intertwined through the first part of the book, with chapters detailing Sonya’s efforts to manage the horror of her husband Richard’s mishandled cancer operation and his resulting memory loss alternating with the story of their love affair and 23-year marriage. By the end of Part One, I was in love with both and equally sympathetic to their plights, not an easy feat.
The characters are deeply flawed by circumstance. Richard has no memory of his past including the existence of his wife and children or the particulars of how to function in society. Sonya is an ex-alcoholic who doesn’t sugar-coat her own trauma and failings caring for a man who is functionally a child. Her “ambiguous loss” tears her apart through three years of Sisyphian effort. She reminds us again and again that the man with the appalling manners and inability to engage in conversation is the same gorgeous guy she’s loved since she was seventeen, the 6’6” chiseled man who now has to be re-taught everything, even to blink.
Needless to say, Sonya tries many cures, from therapies to religions to retreats, desperate to hold herself together and help her husband get better, with varying degrees of success. My favorite line (and there are more than a few moments of humor) comes after one of these experiments, when she finally feels the profound sense of peace and acceptance she's been seeking…then admits to herself she’s “full of s***.”
This book reads like a thriller, albeit a heart-breaking one, pulling you through the “not-knowing” of a spouse’s “permanent disability” while keeping up the suspense of what will happen to the two characters and their children. Highly recommended.
NOTE: I read an advance copy that put every occurrence of the letters “ICU” in a different font and capital letters, as in “diffICUlty.” I’m not sure if this was intentional, but it had the effect of pulling me back to the horrific hospital scenes, keeping them as present in my mind as they must have stayed in the author’s. I hope they survived.
